I know there aren't actually rules but do you still consider a mixed set mixed if it contains more than one denomination from the same casino?

I can’t find enough $5s to resurect my Treasure Casino set. I’m thinking about taking my $1s and $25s and adding others to make the set. My OCD is making it look like a busted TC set because of the two matching chips rather than a mixed set though!

What rules do you have for yourself? Hot stamp and labels OK? Different molds?

While it isn't ideal having two chips from the same set, I don't see a problem with it. The real beauty of a mixed set is that it is always changing!

While it may have 2 chips from the TC now as you slowly find more TC $5's to complete that set the mixed set will eventually not have any TC chips in it all and will take on a whole new look all together.

I love seeing threads with the evolution of a mixed set.

Here are the things I like to see in a mixed set in no particular order:

1. Same mold. Really helps unify the set
2. Same color denomination. Again really unifies the set.
3. If going with shaped inlays, not repeating a shape.
4. Same size inlay

I don't think it's so much rules as it is personal preference and where each of us draws our own line (or how strong our OCD is).

For example, my mixed set has RHC for lower denoms and THC for higher denoms. That doesn't bother me a bit. But I wouldn't mix in house molds.

Also, mixing red and black denoms doesn't bother me at all.

I don't like mixing light and dark inlays. I prefer all dark or all light.

Mostly, I go for color and spot progression.

The one I struggle with the most is 2 denoms from the same casino. My set right now is 100/600/200/100. The $1 and $25 are mint PCA Secondary and it works because it also doubles as a PCA limit set 600/100 and the entire set together looks great (colors and spots). So I've left it as is.

Not a fan of mixed sets, OCD... but I think that if you're doing a mixed set, you ultimately make up the rules.

The only "rule" I've heard people talk about is trying to keep with the same mold. But I think that's up to you.

"Rules?, We don't need no stinking rules!"

Seriously though, I think mixed sets are great. As stated before they are always changing. I have a main mixed set but I often interchange the fracs or $5's in this set.

I would agree that keeping the same mold is good but it is up to you. If you like mixed molds then use mixed molds. At some point you may want to try some house molds and that is good to.

If you want two chips to be from the same casino there is nothing wrong with that either. IT is your set!

IMO a mixed set is an expression of the owner. So go for it!. As a great chipper told me once early on, "a mixed set is really never done!" for me the is what makes it fun!

I agree with every poster in this thread. Especially what @Rhodeman77 has to say. This is one reason I'm struggling with finding a 25 dollar chip for my mixed TRK set. The best 25 dollar chip would be the MT 25. However, I don't want two denominations from the same casino. Then on top of it I'd love to find a tri moon 25 that flows with the set. I so far have been unsuccessful. I've tried four different 25's. I have settled on the best option, but not one that I'm completely in love it. Fucking crazy hobby.

My OCD almost exactly matches this. I really like the idea about the limit set exception :)

Personally, really not a fan of hot stamp look. I think a mixed set should be a truly mixed set, ie each one should be from a different casino. just my 2c.

I also dislike labels.

Question: do you experienced chippers think that building a mixed set is going to be cheaper in the long run than buying a non mixed set?

Personally I prefer the idea of matching chips, but I have seen some mixed sets I like a lot here and could definitely see myself going that way some day especially if it was easier on the wallet.

Not sure it is cheaper. Most of the chips I have in my mixed set are well over $2 each. Mixed sets are not for everyone. I love mine. I was not big into mixed sets until I started mine and then the hunt was on!

We all know it’s all about the hunt!

Crap, I just realized the new $1's I got for my mixed set have red denoms. Ha! How did I not realize that. I wonder if that will bother me?

Personal preference, but I take the name mixed set literally. So for me, each denomination needs to be a different casino. I don't mind mixed molds as long as all the chips are the same type. ( Paulsons, TRKs, BJs, ... )

I recently put together, on the cheap, the used mixed/limit set below.

mixed.jpg

100 Yellow relabeled nickles
200 $1 Lucky Derby ( used as quarters )
100 PCA $0.50
1000 $1 HS Cleveland
400 $5 Garden City
160 $25 Grand Vics
40 $100 Aztar IN

But I'm tilted that
1. The yellow nickle is a relabel
2. The orange quarter is (faded) hot stamped a dollar.
3. The yellow spots on the quarter clashes with the yellow nickel.

So as long as I don't play micro stakes, it's a great set. I'm hoping to eventually find some true hot stamped fracs that will work.

(Disclaimer: Not an experienced chipper...)

No, mixed sets are not necessarily going to be cheaper, at least it wasn't for me.

But regardless, I'm a big advocate of mixed sets to be able to select the best denominations from each. For example, Aztar MO has one of the ugliest $5's, but among the best $25's and $100's. And Casablanca $1's are nearly impossible to find in quantity but I like the other denoms. Yet neither has a quarter. So why not cherry pick the best denoms from the best sets and create your own, as racks/barrels (not sets) you like become available. It gives you lots of options and flexibility and you can swap racks/denoms in and out as you find better ones over time. But when buying the best denoms from the best sets, you'll likely be paying today's premiums.

I put yes. More than one denom from same Casino is ok. It might tilt me a little, but sometimes you have no choice.

But i can't have different molds o_O

Thats just my personal preference in a set i might own. If i sat down to play at a game at someones house, it wouldn't bother me. (much) :)

So a set with THC and RHC molds would be a no-no for you?

All same casino i could live with different molds, but putting a mixed casino set together. Probably not.

And i will say, that set ^ looks great and would enjoy playing with it. I wouldn't give the molds a second thought. Its just for my own MOCD that i wouldn't do it for my own set. MOCD (mildly obsessive compulsive Disorder):)

And it's all a fluid thing too, right? I just swapped out my $1's and I'm sure I'll swap out again when I find something better.

Thanks on the set!

You are welcome to join my game whenever. And you only have Mild OCD? You are lucky. :p

Because pr0n is never a bad thing... here's my mixed set lineup with PCA representing 2 denominations... I love these chips together...

I have no issue with having 2 denoms in one set, especially when the 25 is a PCA secondary. That set looks great.

I started with the house mold idea, but realised it's too pricey and difficult so I'm currently labelling a couple of the denoms. Not sure if that's cheating though, but oh well.

Don’t label those Dunes! :)

Don’t label those Dunes! :)

I would never commit such a heinous crime.

Just the stardust and some MGM dollars as fracs. That will be the end of my labelling. Can't decide between trops or dunes for the $100s.

The best mixed sets are those where you select your favorite chips whose colors and spots mesh well with each other (preferably all THC or scrown molds), then design meaningful custom artwork and do a full inlay replacement on all chips using laminated @Gear labels.

:D:D:D:D:D

I plan to put together a relabelled set of Paulson chips for a tournament set before I do customs.

I really like the colours and pattern on the Aria 1s I won the raffle.

Am I going to hell if I relabel a casino mold and use it in a set that is primarily RHC chips?

This will tell you how much I pick up on certain things - I JUST noticed that the other two inlaid denoms in my mixed set have red denoms too. And one of them is my damn avatar which I see how many times every day? Yet if you asked me, I would have said black.
