I've ordered sample sets of the CC Milanos and Pharaohs from Apache poker. I prefer the look of the Pharaohs but like the feel of the Milanos a lot more. Mainly the weight...the Pharaohs are significantly lighter, which I find odd because everything I find comparing the two says it comes down to the looks. Even videos I've seen show that they weigh within a gram or two of each other going both ways. Another peculiarity is the colors seem to be a bit faded on the sample set compared to videos and pictures I see online. I've chalked it up to lighting differences but sometimes it's so off that's hard to believe. Has anyone else noticed these differences or does anyone have an explanation? Is it possible I received a goofed up sample set?

Welcome to PCF! With China clays, it's pretty common for them to be a bit dusty from the factory. Have you wiped them with a damp paper towel? You could also try a very light coat of mineral oil. Just be careful not to damage the label with too much liquid. Which denoms seem the most faded?

I would echo toasters thoughts. Apply some mineral oil to the chips with a rag. This will make the colors on a china clay chip pop. I too prefer The Milanos over the pharoahs. However it's universally understood that it is completely subjective.

as for the faded chips, some of the Milanos have a history of fainting. Particularly the Pink colored chips.

Welcome.

I'll throw in my .02 cent ante...

I never noticed a weight difference between the various CC, but I found the Milanos to be the least colorful of them all, and probably my least favorite based solely on looks. To me, the Pharaohs were a bit brighter if a bit plasticky looking with the Milanos just being muted and dull.

Have you considered the Majestics from Apache? They have the best color of all 3, and I'm hoping the upcoming CC Dunes chips are even better since I ordered 500 sight unseen. The CPS chips are nice too. The texturing makes them have a different feel and I liked those too.

Good luck. Samples are fun.

Have you actually weighed the Pharohs? I know it sounds crazy, but the weight difference could be in your head. I've read discussions there where people suggest that chips with larger inlays and less exposed clay, like a Paulson RHC, "feel' lighter, compared to a THC, by some trick of the mind. Could that be happening here?

About the Majestic's, be aware of there are some very noticeable circumference differences between some denominations. If you were getting a small cash set, I do not think it was all that noticeable. However I believe the 100s are one of the biggest culprits. This means if you are getting a tournament set, A workhorse chip might be noticeably different?

That said, I really like the design and mold of the Majestic's. I purchased a decent set, but due to the difference in size, I let my set go.

I agree totally, most of the denominations have circumference issues. Really annoying when racked up. However I am still keeping mine as I've got the boardwalk gb that will replace them as my main set. Unfortunately the majestics have been relegated to a travel set.

They were a bit dusty but I wiped it all off. I even ran a few under hot water just to make sure. I think I misspoke in my OP...the colors just don't seem right, and in general they are lighter in color. However, the red $5 chip looks more like a maroon color instead of the bright red I see in a lot of pictures. The black $100 dollar chip's colors all look watered down compared to pictures I see. Same with the $1 chip. I'm trying to take some pictures but the camera on my phone is messed up.

It's so funny you wrote this cause this morning I picked up both sets and they felt about the same. I went out and bought a scale and the Pharaohs are lighter on average. 11 Milanos averaged 9.4g (min - 8.9, max - 9.9) and 9 Pharaohs averaged 8.9g (min - 8.5, max - 9.3). I weighed 9 Milanos and 9 Pharaohs at the same time and the difference was only 4 grams. Is this all in my head or is that a noticeable weight? Anyone else have similar weights?

Finally got my camera working...

I'm comparing those to images I find online like this and they looks pretty different to me.

Is it just the lighting?

Honestly speaking, the pharaoh's were the least favourite of the China clay chips. My preference is majestics, Milano, dunes and then pharaoh.

I agree with you about the colours, I was not impressed with the pharaoh colours at all, they felt way too muted and dull.

Edit: but having said that, they have the best spot progression, which is unique with China clays! It all comes down to personal preference.

Well it is certainly misleading sometimes viewing photos of chips but I absolutey loved my Pharaohs when I had them. The colors definitey looked more like the last picture in your last post. Great colors tbh and if they seemed muted at all, it just meant that the factory dust needed to be wiped off still.

Thanks for the info. I never noticed this from the sample. This is too bad. Seems like there is some issue with every CC set. Hopefully the new CC Dunes will get it all right...

Where did you get that bottom pic? Photoshopped?

All the China clays pop after being oiled. They look much better. More vibrant etc. Try it and let me know what you think.

Did you actually weigh them? Any feedback?

Also I'm 99% sure all these China clays are made at the same factory but have different designs and stickers.

One or two factories, tops. But not all of the produced china clay chips there contain the exact same materials.

That's just a picture that I found online. All others that I've seen look pretty much the same. I did weigh them and show the weights in my last post. Pharaohs were a half of a gram lighter on average.

You can check out photos of my Pharaohs (since sold) in my album. They definitley don't look like your photos to me.

I'm convinced there's two types of CC Pharaoh chips going around...

Here is a picture of my samples. Only ordered a few months ago. I don't think I even cleaned them and they are not oiled. Hope this helps.
