Taking a business trip to Miami for a couple of days, and will have a free evening/night - was thinking of hitting up a local poker room. Was thinking about the Seminole Hard Rock, but a little worried its going to be filled with crushers with the WPT event there. Any recommendations from locals/frequent travelers?

I would still recommend Hard Rock. The poker room is rather new and nice and huge. The casino itself was just completely renovated and expanded so it is really nice all around and good food options too. Yeah there are lots of fishy tourists and cruise shippers who the sharks hunt but there are so many tables you can always jump to another if you don’t like the vibe at one. I can’t remember leaving down there and I am admittedly not a great player. It is just going to be the liveliest experience all around. Is there a WPT event the day you plan to play?

If you want a small room just for poker with average players you can go to Gulfstream. Locals are friendly and not particularly good.

Isle Pompano has a new WSOP branded poker room that I haven’t been to since the relaunch. This might be nice but can’t vouch for it. Slightly further north.

I wouldn’t recommend any of the smaller rooms in Miami to an out of towner unless you speak Spanish. Probably the same for Miccosukee unless there is a WPT event at Hard Rock.

Check PokerAtlas for daily tourneys.

Thanks for the recommendation @Eloe2000 - had a great time and glad I made the bigger trek.

Wow. That was quick. I agree with @Eloe2000 on the local card rooms. Seminole Hard Rock and Gulfstream are very nice card rooms and overall venues. Mikkosukee is a bit dated and way out of the way. Calder had a decent room but i have not been in about 3 years. Pompano Isles is nice, near my office, but the crowd seems to lean heavy towards the greatest generation and the all you can eat buffett (which is very good actually).

Of course, the best room in Miami is this private club called Casa Mango but it’s a bit exclusive and I’ve yet to wrangle an invite.

It’s harder than getting a table opening week at Joe’s Stone Crabs.

I might have an in with the manager so one day..... ;)

So on this hand we pick up A8 of hearts on the button. Several limpers, we open to 15 and get two callers.

Flop comes j88 with the j of hearts.

Utg opens for 20
HJ calls
I raise to 100
Utg calls
Hj shoves - 40 more
I call. HJ immediately yells "Damnit he has trips I knew it!"
UTG tank calls the 40.

Turn is a offsuit deuce. Utg checks, I go all in for my remaining 40 or so and UTG calls.

River is a 6.

UTG turns over 87 for a worse 8.
HJ shows...and I kid you not...A 10 offsuit.

Explain that line to me.
