Years ago I subscribed to an online Poker class led by (my poker hero) Daniel Negreanu called PokerVT. It was fantastic. Unfortunately, it just disappeared one day. I've never really figured out what happened or where it went. Fast-forward to today, and I see an ad on my YouTube stream for a Masterclass by Daniel Negreanu. I've looked into it and you can subscribe to the class put on by Daniel, but also other really interesting subjects - like Chess by Garry Kasparov.

So, a few questions.

Has anyone here ever subscribed to Masterclass? If so, what was the subject and what was your experience? Would you recommend it?

Also...

It appears that Masterclass is offering a BOGO holiday special through 12/26. In other words, if I sign up for a year of all-access ($180), I'm able to 'gift' the same package to someone else at registration. That being said, would anyone be interested in purchasing that offer from me for $90? In other words, we'd simply split the overall cost of two packages.

Let me hear from you soon.

They have been advertising this on the DAT Poker podcast which Daniel participates in. I'm not really interested at this time but if you do it I'd love to hear how you think of it.

I've got one PCF member interested via PM. I'll be sure to post here if that doesn't come together for some reason.

I paid for the class. I’ve been playing for a long time, but I’m generally a losing player. I thought I saw a noticeable improvement in my game. It felt good to formalize some of the things I’d previously just tried to play by feel.

All in all, I’m glad I bought it. As always, you get out what you put in. I bought on a whim and wasn’t really ready to commit to a study routine.

One thing, I intentionally only bought the one class because that way I have access to the material forever. The $180 you see is all access for one year. Just an FYI.

I am also interested in what you think about the class. I was wondering how much this class would help me in a home game setting, against a wide range of players.

a little background:
I only play at a casino a few times a year, and then only tournaments. I play mostly smaller home tournaments (10-30 players max) and low stakes ($20-$100), however, I started to play more cash games over the last couple of years. I have read a few books over the years so I know the basics and some advanced concepts, but have a hard time apply some of the advanced stuff to home games. Honestly, the more I read the worse I do in home games. I try to apply the concepts but I am not playing against pros, I find I do better just playing the player and worry less about the odds and over thinking things. The better I know the player the better I do, I tend to struggle more against unknown players.

I am a winning player overall in home games, I have kept stats and I up 23% over the last 10 years in home games. I have no idea if this is good or not. In the casino over that time I am a break even player.

I looked at a number of reviews on the class... it sounds like the prevailing thought is that if you’re crushing poker now, and very familiar with terms like GTO vs exploitive play, then this class will be more of a refresher and probably not help all that much... but if you are break even and think a “range” is something your mom used to cook on, then maybe this class has merit.

That all said, I am profitable, but still find merit in reading books that discuss principles I am Already familiar with.

Lol I don’t fit cleanly into either camp here, but I was closer to the latter. I believe the sentiment is probably true, though. I think the players who would benefit most are those that know the game well but haven’t seen the type of success their experience warrants.

I believe that any time you think about your game, you will likely improve.

I have yet to read or watch anything that was far off from what I already had conceptualized. That said, I am a "gamer" and am well versed in multiple types of strategy and basic odds, so YMMV.

I did enjoy PokerVT back in the day... "Small Ball" was just a tool for the toolbox, but like anything poker, you have to change your strategy according to your opponents, and you just can't really teach that. For the most part, I see it as a way for poker pros to capitalize on their name.

Now the Master Classes in cooking... those have piqued my interest.

Skipped all master class conversation to award extra points for somebody that actually uses pique, peak, and peek correctly.

Meanwhile the amateur cooks are saying how Ramsay’s just making a cash grab, but they could really learn a thing or two from this Negreanu guy.
Absolutely what I thought after reading that post! Hilarious.

So far I'm through Lesson 4 and am quite pleased with what I'm learning. Daniel is one of those people I wish we could just bottle-up and keep forever. Not just for his poker knowledge, but he seems like a genuinely good person.

Fine. Now can you please use your superpowers to do something about the “it’s” in PCF’s standard auction template?

In addition to the poker class, I'm very interested in the chess (Kasparov) and comedy (Steve Martin) classes. I think I may just spring for this.

Also if someone has done the Tom Morello guitar instruction I’d love to hear from you.

Former World Champion. One of the best for a long, long time.
If the question was about Kasparov, well he is the absolute top, a lot mightier than Doyle or Negreanu have been in poker.
If I were into chess, I wish there were Kasparov pills, injections, or even suppositories:LOL:

Getting close to the end of Daniel's poker class. Pretty good for those that aren't beginners but want to learn to play better outside of home games. (me, for instance). I don't know if those with a far better grasp of poker will learn anything, though. Make sure you download the PDFs for each lesson and read the discussions as well. Makes the overall experience way better.

I bought a friend a Masterclass gift years ago, she loved it. Got an email from them about paying an annual subscription that gives you access to the whole site. Decided to do this ($280AUD) and am loving it!

I've watched Sorkin and Rhimes on screenwriting, Mamet on writing. Looking forward to all the movie directors too and freaked out when I recently saw Tom Morello and Santana on there. I've got a few guitars but never learned to play and they are two of my favourite guitarist so they'll be next.

Is he a decent name in chess? My son is into chess...

I thought this was a joke at first. Kasparov brought preparation for a tournament to a new level. He dominated chess at the world level for a very long time.

Not a joke, just didn’t know. Don’t follow chess. Just like if you ask a non poker players about Doyle Brunson, they might not know who you’re talking about, lol

Gary Kasparov was better at chess than Michael Jordan was at basketball. No one could touch him for decades. He is the greatest player to ever live. That said, recent advancements of AI have allowed newer grand masters to train in ways not previously understood. As a result, the skill levels are rising across the board. Newer players have higher ELO ratings than we've seen in the past. Magnus Carlsen already has a higher rating than Kasparov ever achieved. It'll be interesting to see how the chess world evolves from here, but before the modern AI era, there was Kasparov, then a fair amount of distance, then there was everyone else.

That’s cool. I look forward to having my 12 year old son check out the class... he’s a bit of a chess prodigy(ish). I taught him the rules and the first game we played he took me down to 3 pieces (that was when he was 6 years old). He’s a bit of a wiz in a number of areas, but has some significant ADHD issues that challenge him in many ways.

We’d go on a beach vacation, and while everyone was at the pool or beach, he’d spend hours and hours playing the life size chess against old timers who’d stroll and by and chuckle at the youngster who was playing around with the chess pieces... I’d always suggest they give him a shot. He loves chess, but He’s never had any formal instruction, and just plays how his crazy brain tells him to (sometimes 3 moves ahead, sometimes like he has no idea what he’s doing...).

Here he was playing albino dragon (Gil) a number of years back... (after the MTTD 1...) albino dragon was no slouch.

Beach resort fun... We even toyed with the idea of skipping his vacation and just buying the life sized chess board (would have been a whole lot cheaper)...
