Mason Malmuth on how not to run a poker room (1 Viewer)

There is a pretty long thread on 2+2 of him gathering everyone's opinions too. Some odd takes from pure players who would make some of the world's worst home game hosts...

He truly wants poker rooms and card rooms to be better. He's giving the book free to anybody in management. Sounds like @Anthony Martino needs to encourage some of his room managers to take Mason up on the offer.

The same manager who argued with me that they have 25 years in the industry and the cubans couldn't possibly be cheating?

Or the manager who implemented double rake if we want to run it twice in PLO?

Or the manager who unfriended and blocked me on Facebook because I didn't like that they went from a 300bb starting stack to a 100bb stack in tourneys?

They don't give two fucks here in FL. The Seminoles have the politicians in their pockets and a monopoly.

Until there is real competition, they won't listen to us, they know we'll play anyway

o_Oo_Oo_O Wow, double rake to run it twice? Lol unreal.

The Washington tribes and politicians (concerning gaming/casinos I mean) sounds a lot like the Florida situation: they also operate in a "fkc you we make the rules" fashion and also own every single vote/law maker we have. (There is a reason there is a ton of Washington small room, non tribal casino sets out there and this is the only state in the nation that online poker was not only specifically made illegal but also a felony.)

But daaaaaamn, raked twice to run it twice? That's a new level of wow.

Sad. Just imagine the business they could do if they gave a shit about best serving the players.

He is saying some of the same things that many of us have known for years like, for example, that nl is bad long term for a card room.

I haven't read that specific book/document, but I'd put money on the fact that just about everything he says is well thought out and has merit.

The guy knows a thing or two about poker & poker rooms etc.

thoughts on WHAT? Is that some poker version of a rick-roll?
LOL, sorry, didn't mean to be so vague. I just read the article and was curious if a) anybody had picked up the book, and b) what their thoughts were if they had.

Monopolies suck!

Double rake for running it twice = always running it once. Bad for the game, but that rake is even worse.

I played in a home raked game that the host kept finding ways to increase the rake. Started out as a flat $2 if there is a flop. Then it want to $3 if the pot hit $30 and $2 more if someone went all-in and was called. And if they wanted to run it twice there was another $2.

By the time the rake got to this point most of the regulars had moved on and the game barely happened anymore.

I'll never understand the greed. Why kill the golden goose?

I have a buddy that plays in a Poker Mavens game that got started when the pandemic hit. The host was one of the players in a fairly regular 40/80 and 100/200 game. Solid enough they were probably making 100k a year from grinding.

When the pandemic hit they offered to host online playing the same stakes as before. They lowered the rake to $3/hand which players thought was a bargain. It literally ran 24/7 with 2 solid tables for like 8 months, at which point the host started the rake creep up to 4, then to 5 and finally 6. I spoke to my buddy last week and the game hasn't run in about a month when it went to $6/hand.

The host probably clear a million dollars last year in rake alone and it would've kept running with at least one table, even with people transitioning back to live games. However they got greedy and boom, game dead.

If you play the time rake game at Tampa Hard Rock ($8 every 30 minutes, or $10 if you're seated in the private room) you can run it twice without paying extra

But in 2/2/5 PLO, you pay $5 rake + $2 jackpot drop + $5 rake AGAIN if you go twice

I tried to hold to my guns on principle and only go once, refusing to reward their greed

But two fucking months of watching droolers get stacks in with under 10% equity and wiggle out every fucking time forced me to change my tune :(

They have more business than they can handle, they frequently have lists for games and a full room

There's no incentive to cater to us pain in the ass players

Sorry, I figured out that the website was cutting off the story after the first sentence because I use ad-blocker. So when I clicked, I only had this single statement and had me scratching my head. I figured out from later replies that people were seeing more than I was.

^^ x 2.
These days, I don't read 2+2 like I used to a few years ago - but I liked Mason Malmuth. I've always thought highly of him.

Read it and trying to implement at a room down in México.
Did you get a physical book or electronic? If it's the latter, would you mind sharing it with me?

Edit: nm. Thought that was the only way to get it, but bought the kindle version now. :)

Electronic, he sent it via email when he was first asking if people wanted to get it.

Hope you like it.
