I just recently deconstructed and rebuilt my poker table with a slightly raised rail. Now waiting on my semi-custom @T_Chan felt! I'll post pictures when I install the felt and then reconstruct the table.

Decided to kill some time with some scraps and build a heads up table. Mostly winging it since I've done a few normal size tables now.

Heads up table build...
I screwed several pieces of plywood together and cut them all at the same time.
You can see the outline of the 4" rail.

8E476481-03B0-4D47-B4CD-C56AEC3CCB95.jpeg

Drilled 1/4" hole and then used a spade bit to countersink the area to hammer in a tee nut.

After setting the tee nuts, I locked it in place with the 1/4" hex bolts to keep it secure.

Didn't take a picture, but planed, rasped, sanded the edges when they were all bound together.

Next is cutting out the rail piece. Drilled a starter hole for the inside jigsaw cut.

I "installed" the rail, so I could trace out the 4" on the sheets below. They are 1/4" thick plywood.

I removed the rail and did a rough drawing of about 1.75" from the edge. I am going to cut this out of three sheets of 1/4" ply.
After dropping in several of the hex bolts for alignment, I tossed a few screws through it to keep them from shifting.

Here are the three sheets cut. I only need two, but I cut a spare just in case.
I also cut a notch where I did another starter drill hole. This will make it easier to lift out the finished surface when it's all installed.

Sanded the inside edges, then mineral spirits on the top of the bottom and each of these 1/4" pieces.
IMG_2396.JPG

Glued each piece down and then clamped. used the bolts to keep alignment.
IMG_2398.JPG

Epoxied the tee nuts in the rail section. Probably not necessary.
IMG_2399.JPGIMG_2400.JPG

Going to let it all set/glue overnight.

Today we will do the rail and the playing surface!

Cleaned up the epoxy, gave the entire surface a light sand, and mineral spirits. Once it dried, I gorilla taped over the epoxied holes.
IMG_2405.JPG

3M 77 Adhesive Spray, letting it set before I glue it to the 1" High Density foam.
IMG_2406.JPG

Traced outside and inside overhang using a scrap piece of wood as a spacer. That's the "scrap" 1" HD foam from my normal size poker table railing.
IMG_2407.JPG

Also glued the playing insert to 1/4" closed cell foam. Cut it out with a box cutter.
IMG_2408.JPG

Test fitting the playing insert into the base with the glued 1/4" x 2 edge pieces.
IMG_2409.JPG

Here is a close up of the cutout so I can more easily lift the playing surface out of the well.

Using an old electric turkey carving knife that's relegated to garage projects to cut the foam. Makes a weird noise but it's been holding strong for a couple of years now.

Rail foam cut. I initially drew two outer lines, but ended up going with the inner line.

"Test" fit the top and the playing surface into the base.

The playing surface cloth was delivered wrinkled so I had to steam/iron it out. Ironed on low temp on the backside to avoid melting it.

Light application of 3M 77 then the felt...ever so carefully.

Staple around the edge and then some gorilla tape to hold the ends. This table won't be anywhere hot, so I don't have worries that the tape will melt.

Two coats of primer on the base.

After it dried, but before my first coat of spray paint- that's when I test fit the felt and rail. It looks like a table!!

I have a few ideas for how to finish the base edge to make it look nice.

One coat of spray paint. Few more to go.

T molding is one option
That's a good option. The idea I had and went with was to stitch a few pieces of extra vinyl and do an edge covering. Almost done mounting it, will finish it tomorrow.

I sewed two 2"x21" and two 2"x42" alternating strips together.

IMG_2424.JPG1491B8AD-DF21-41B7-A414-C119DB66CBA8.jpeg

Stapled it around the edge. Will get pictures in better light tomorrow.

Assembled the base of the table by bolting it to the rail.
IMG_2443.JPGIMG_2444.JPG

Side view, assembled. Just have it on top of a couple of bar stools, just to see how it looks.
IMG_2445.JPG

Slide in cup holders fit, per the design to set the bolts back towards the outer edge of the rail.

That turned out really nice. What are you doing for legs?

That's good timing on that question, since my next couple of posts are going to be about that!

I got a table off of craigslist that had a junky top and was all rusted. But it is an excellent, heavy metal base. I tossed the top and gave the base a light sand, but that did very little.
IMG_2402.JPGIMG_2393.JPGIMG_2392.JPG

Did some science research, and soaked it in a vinegar/salt mixture for a day.
IMG_2394.JPGIMG_2425.JPG

Scrubbed it with a wire brush and steel wool.
887E4CAD-94DC-4130-98F9-53E813F39EFD.jpeg

Quick rinse with water and then baking soda to neutralize the vinegar.

Gave it a rinse with baking soda/water, and then clean it up with 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits to dry it out.
EC10CC3F-F637-40A5-AEDE-FEAE2A5EAC4A.jpeg

Used a razor and some sandpaper to clean up the adhesive feet that were on the bottom.

Plan was to paint, but it has so much character that I'm going to have to clear coat it instead.

Adding new mounting holes to the base. Used a center punch to guide the drill bit. 4 x 1/4" and 4 x 5/16" holes.

This is how the bottom will look with the hex bolts.
I need to either use three washers or trim the ends of the bolts to get the height exactly right. I'll probably trim the ends of the bolts.

To seal the bare metal, I'm using Penetrol. It will be my first time using it. Going to do two coats on the bottom and then two coats everywhere else. So this part should be done in around 4 days.

Random Scrap Project:
While I'm waiting for the clear coats to dry for the table base, I wanted to make something out of the leftover scraps.

In my home game, we sometimes take a collection out of bomb pots etc and then give it out as bad beat hands, high hands, etc in our small cash game. I was thinking that something like the dice tray at a craps table would be useful to have. A place where the chips collected are clearly out of the way but can be seen.

I also didn't want to plan anything, and just sort of wing this one too.
Hmm, that shape is awfully small. And familiar...

Really, is that actually happening?

Well, looks like that was a useful hour spent shaping that oval of wood.
Oh and now here's a sample of speed cloth.

Is that really the world's smallest rail? That looks pretty difficult.
Yes it is and yes it was.
And is that padded with foam, why?
Yes it is and thanks for noticing. And because I thought it would be funny.

Yep, you knew it all along. A mini table, for the table. Only took 3 hours. Time well spent.

Nice work, came out pretty cool!!!!

Finished!
IMG_2528.JPG

Two layers of the clear coat on the bottom, two layers on the rest of the entire surface, and let the last coat dry for 2 days.
IMG_2522.JPG

The bolts were a little too long, so I cut off the ends with an angle grinder. I colored the excess with a sharpie for a reference.

Assembled!
