Figured I'd start a build thread. Not enough of those around. Here's what I'm going for

10 player + dealer
Lighted raised rail
Cupholders in rail
Layout I got from eBay
Dual Pedestal (eventually)

All materials on hand. Hoping to be done by the end of the month.

Crappy pic of layout:

Sweet. Looking forward to updates. Where'd you get the plans? I want to finally build a table this summer vacation.

Nice, looking forward to the build.
Been thinking of trying one but with my skills i'd probably buy everything and end up f'n it all up.

I had two pieces of plywood from my last builds. One is warped, so I figured I'd get started on the rings and risers. Used a Jasper circle jig to do the cupholder rings. Took me a few tries to get it right. The one on the lift is the last one I did of all you see, and the first one that is correct. But I got them done. This was all day Saturday, and I never got to the risers. (Took a few breaks to rest my knees...)

I said pedestals eventually, because I haven't bought any yet. I may or may not get them before I finish the rest of the table. To give myself some options, I built this base for now. It's just a couple 4x4's, cut down and screwed together. I stained it with some PolyShades stain I had on hand. Price for the whole thing, around $22.

I used a couple different sources, so I'm kinda winging it, but not really. Mostly I'm using this build plan:

The cutout listed is mostly what I'm going for.

Nice. What will be your rail color?

The same black suede you can see in the background of the third picture above. With brass.cupholders.

Love that layout. Looking forward to seeing the completed project for sure!

No real progress this week. I ordered a few more things. My acrylic diffuser strips and LED's, I don't think will be long enough, so I ordered more of both. I'm hoping to get the wood cut tomorrow. But I'm soliciting opinions on cupholder placement. There are four different options, each with two pictures taken from opposite ends of the table. I'd like to know what you think. Remember the layout has what I'm calling "position lines", which you can kind of make out in the picture.

So, this is option Alpha:

What do you think? I'm open to alternative suggestions. MS Paint drawings will be accepted. And because you've read this far, two more pictures. These are just two display cases I have hanging up. I have two other cases, but I haven't put them up yet. (Mostly because I can't find my sample set of Le Noir's. I think I loaned them out and they never made it back...)

It may be unpopular but have you considered putting them in the middle of each section? I find it much more convenient to have my drink right in the middle so I'm not constantly elbowing it or having it get in the way when dealing and/or reaching for chips/cards/etc. This is all very subjective and just my preference.

^this^ when the cups are in the rail, I always recommend that they're centered on the players. Especially with a dedicated dealer, there's practically zero chance of a drink getting hit in this position.

this is how most casinos have them from any casino ive been to where cup holder is built into the rail. and i think ive only seen one spilled drink at a table

That's how I have them in my existing two tables, though the cupholders are in the playing surface. I hadn't considered it for this table. Not sure why...

I think the cup holders should also be centered that way there are not a lot of swaying arms reaching for drinks and chips.

Like this:

Yep as others have said defo have them in the middle, directly in front of each player, looking forward to seeing the progress of this build

Cupholders are going in the center of each "position". Seems to be any easy choice. We made a bit of sawdust today, though we ran into some snags.

This is my friend, Thomas. He designed my custom 8V's, his own custom 8V's, plus a couple other things for me. He also did the overwhelming majority (read, all) of the wood cuts on our last table build. We did four tables, only one of which was his own. He tolerates me and my craziness, and that's enough to canonize him, in my book. But he's also helping us with this latest build, and I just wanted to note my appreciation for him somewhere. He's a good dude.

My other friend, (there aren't many), also had a cameo. He took this photo, which was pretty much his only contribution on the day...

I was watching the Euro 2016 qualifiers yesterday. Did anybody see this? That's fog that had rolled in during halftime. Those are crazy conditions to play in...

Okay, back to the table. Side note, I'm hoping to get some black carpet put in the poker room. Don't know if it'll happen in time. I also need to hang a light fixture, but I'm no good with that...

I'm guaranteed to injure myself at least once during a build. Last time, I ran a staple into my thumb with the pneumatic stapler. When I built the ellipse table, I dropped the template while wearing shorts. It scraped along my shin, drawing blood. On the octagon build, the scars were emotional, and I'd rather not talk about it.

So here we go, I was prepping the base sheet for veneer, and the sander remembered its thirst for blood.. (I had taken my gloves off to wash my hands, and had restarted sanding for maybe 6 seconds when this happened...)

Speaking of veneer, This is what I'm using:

Veeneer%20box_zpsli9w8jnl.jpg

It's very light, almost white, so I thought it might look nice with the dark stain I used with the legs. So I ironed a piece onto the base and hit it with the stain:

Didn't really care for that, so I ran out to the hardware store where they wear the orange aprons, spent about 47 minutes in the aisle where the keep the wood stains and such. I picked one up, carried it around for a bit while I looked at some other things. Then put it back and chose a different one. I went and got another set of sawhorses, and on my way to checkout, went back down the wood stain aisle, got sucked into looking at that panel that shows how the stains look, and ultimately decided to get the original one back into my basket. So I stained this:

With this:

And got this: (Nails for reference only. They aren't actually inserted.... Was just trying to decide if I should add another coat of stain..)

More to come tomorrow, I hope. (Oh crap, it's after midnight, so I mean today.) In about twelve hours, I'm hoping to be making more sawdust working on the rail, spacers, and playing surface cuts... We'll see!

Great build thread. I almost bought that felt off eBay but shipping was a killer so decided against it. Glad a chipper picked it up.
