Dad recently passed and we are cleaning out his old shop. Any machine shop experts? We’re looking to clean it up and out. Curious if there are any good resources on valuations and market place(s)? Here are some photos of the larger machines. Got a lot of smaller stuff too.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I’m not an expert by any means and will let others chime in, however I would certainly recommend doing some research as lathe’s can be quite pricey. That JET lathe could have some value to it (depending on condition, functioning, etc)

I have no idea about any of the machines but I’m very sorry for your loss

My condolences Ethan - very sorry to hear that.

There is quite a market for vintage tools - especially those made in the USA. I know little but I would bet both the South Bend and Jet lathes are worth well north of 1k. The problem with a lot of this stuff is that you need to find the right buyer - both willing to pay a fair price and being able to pick up and transport a 1000lb machine.

There's also considerable value in the tooling - a machinist probably spends more on tooling and measuring devices than the machines themselves. If you find someone who will take the lot - keep back the measuring devices (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators etc); these are small but hold their value extremely well. Anything with Starrett, Browne & Sharpe or Mitutoyo on it, grab and keep separate.

More and more people are figuring out that the skilled trades aren't just dirty low-pay jobs for those non-college folks. There is a lot of value here, but patience will probably be required to extract a lot of it. Sorry for your loss.

@FDLmold is correct. You’ll definitely be able to get a lot of value but you’ll have to be willing to show the items multiple times. There’s certainly people out there that will buy those items. If you list them on Facebook Marketplace, make sure to note that they will need to be able to move and transport the items.

If I had to do a rough estimation for each item without knowing conditions,

Drill Press - $250
Index Mill - $1800
Big Joe Mill - $2500 (assuming that it’s not just the head)
South Bend Lathe - $2200
JET Lathe - $2500

I’m also assuming that there would be some tooling to go with each item, and if that’s the case, those prices would be more than fair in my opinion.

I'm clueless about the tool. Sorry for your loos and good luck with moving these items along. I hope they find a good home (or homes)!

I already have given my condolences to @Ethan, including in verse, but the loss of loved ones takes life-long healing efforts.
I still dream of my late dad.

Slowly starting to realize that, Nik. Cheers buddy.
