Hello everyone.
As with most everyone else that is relatively new to the forum I ended up here because it was time to take my home poker chips to the next level and Hobbyphilic brought me here.
I've been lurking on the forum now for probably 3 months, and in that time have realized I already have a problem. I WANT ALL THE CHIPS!
So as far too many have, I started my main poker chip adventure with dice chips. Have the set of 600 total from when I purchased them in my Navy days back in 2004. These have become well used and until about the last year or so seemed adequate. That all changed when a friend of mine brought over some chips he bought, nothing special, just a set of poker knights.
I quickly realized I hated my dice chips and must get a new set. Easy right? WRONG! I have been looking for nearly a year now at what I might want. I have bought 7 sample sets of various chips (china clays and ceramics) and all I have found is that I want them all.
As I dove into this forum a little while back and thought at first, I'll just check this place out and get some knowledge. Holy crap this world can suck you in. Since lurking on this forum, watching hobbyphilic and Chris Manzoni on YouTube and looking at all the different offerings I've come to realized there is no way to just have one set of chips.
I've run home games for a few years now, and the game is starting to get bigger. Normally it has been 6-8 at a game, but the last few have grown to 10.
Now the problem, I have a horrible case of OCD. If a chip set has x number of chip denominations/styles I want them all. Makes no sense from a logic prospective for a small stakes cash set to have 1k or 5k chip denominations, BUT I WANT THEM ALL!
I have curbed the OCD a little with some sets I've looked at, but not all of them. My home game does include tourney and cash games so a set for each is in order. Most of the guys that show up I trust and wouldn't try to sneak a 25 into a cash game from a tourney but I don't want that temptation to exist.
First set I believe I want is the Tiki Kings. I love em. The regulars at my game love them as well, from the pictures I showed them.
After in no particular order are DDLM, possibly the lucky dragons, majestics, royals, Aria's card mold, Super poker world just to name a few. Then of course there are the "goal" chips, I would love a limit cash set of Aurora star's, Aurora star tourney set, Casa Mango's would be great (@Eloe2000 great job) and possibly my own CPC set at some point.
Amazingly enough most of the real casino chips I don't seem to have a huge draw too. IDK what it is, most just do not appeal to me in some way or fashion.
I have plenty of ideas of how I would lay out a set for each of the mentioned chips and I'm sure in the not to distant future a good number of these sets will be realized.
Sorry for the long post, but thanks for reading.

Man I love a good "Ben Book" for a first post! The chipping bug done caught another... unfortunately @Fall3n there is no cure, when it gets you bad... even when your dream set of chips are sitting on your table... quickly you will find you push them to the side and look for a other set.

This hobby is amazing because it trully doesn't have to be the same thing to everyone... and also over time it is possible (likely) your tastes may change.

I love customs like the next guy but for me bringing an old school casino used set back together, cleaning them up and making a playable set of them is the best gratification. They have history, a story behind them... figuring out the past story is part of the fun!

I also got sucked into the Poker World Chips myself... even went all the way down to the penny with our set

But they are not even close to old school leaded clay. If it's all about looks and not the feel then maybe you will manage to get out cheap... but eventually Clay will probably win!

Good Luck on the Persuit!

Fellow Chipper Ben

Thanks everyone for the welcome.
Ya I knew my first post may have been a little long but sometimes that is how it goes.
I do fully intend to go after some higher end chip samples as @allforcharity pointed out. Stock chip samples have been all over tracked down thus far.

Any recommendations on curbing OCD to prevent sets with way too many denominations based on use?

@Ben8257 i would imagine at some point I’ll end up with a casino set because as you say clay will probably win out. My only thought would be if I’m able to get a set of aurora stars that may change things.

Aurora stars are cool, the hot stamp tourney set is probably the nicest of all the NAGB chips (search ”NAGB” on the site for insight). But leaded real casino Paulson THCs or TR Kings are another thing entirely. They are incredible!

Then of course you have the BCCs, that for my money beat just about anything else, barring maybe the above mentioned leaded ones. BCC certainly win when factoring in price though imo

@Eriks Thanks for the in-site. Yes I think the Aurora stars hot stamp tourney set are pretty much the nicest set I've seen yet. Bonus is the Aurora cash set in a limit set just scream beauty (Love the 43mm $20)

Listen to this song and scour the classifieds.

Perfectly sums up my OCD problem.
Are Samples of an entire set good enough to solve the OCD problem? Anyone a little obsessive care to chime in?

Welcome! What's so great about this hobby is there's many options out there and so many difference opinions and none of them are wrong, it's just preference. Sounds like you've already done some due diligence in getting samples and getting your feet wet. Ask if you have any questions!
