Jackson's

When I decided I wanted to make a custom set, I did the entire book of, "What should my basement card room be called?" Jackson's Emporium, Jaksons Card Room, Jacksons Gambling Hall, blah blah, you name it, I'd thought of it....and none of it fit.. I loved the term Speakeasy, just because we were so in the dark, hidden about what we were doing back when I started playing poker, that Speakeasy was a kinda fun term. Well, I ran across a chip set on CT with that name, and I wanted to be different, so I had to scrap it altogether... Well then me and a buddy at work who used to run the town with me back in high school, grew up together, went into the same career field, we were talking about those days, and that story came up about where we used to play poker. So....

Back in the early 2000's, 2002-2006, there was a group of 5 or so of us, that would sneak into the semi-local casinos with our fake ID's, hat's glasses, and play whatever poker game we could sit at. Well, we got caught, and ran....we always felt like somebody was looking for us, so the words 'poker' disappeared from our vocabulary. Whenever the convo started about what we were doing, it was simply, 'Going to Jackson's'. There was never a, 'going to play poker, gambling, rolling 3's', it was always simply, short, sweet... 'Jackson's'. That word in itself meant all anybody needed to know. If they didn't know what it was, they weren't invited, and nobody needed to explain it to them.

We would leave class our senior year of high school, one person walking past us in the hallway, and he'd look up, and all that was said when we made eye contact was: "Jackson's", a nod of the head, and we'd see them at our standard 7pm cash game.

I bought a relatively cheap set (at the time, now it's impossible to find some denoms. I still have the set and will never let it go), and we began playing home games. The .25/.25, and .25/.50 variety. It was well above our bankroll. A bunch of high school teens playing .25/.50 with $20 buy-ins max usually. We never had more than a few hundred on the table on a big night. 8-10 of us, buying in for $20, but whatever, we were playing poker, and loving it.

I had gone through a poker chip design tool, drew sketches, looked online for chips for ideas, the works.. I just couldn't find something that was what I wanted. When I contacted Gene at ABC gifts and awards, and told him what I was looking for...
I wanted simple.... that's the first thing. Simple. So simple that I had almost gone entirely solid several times, but didn't quite want that. But simple. I also didn't want a traditional inlay. It's as almost as if I didn't want a poker chip exactly, but rather something that represented a denomination, the same way that a poker chips did, but wasn't a traditional poker chip....Yeah, you read that right.. I had no idea what I wanted...

Gene sent me a first draft...I almost immediately fell in love... Solid pink, white, brown, and blue, with the numbers, and the term Jackson in an elegant font. That was just about it. What about using a gradient on the face of the chip? So it wasn't solid, but faded a bit from a darker, to a lighter along the edgespot? I have indeed seen chipcos get that white ring near the outer edge after tons of play...perhaps a fade would help make that less noticeable in time. He sent over some faded chips...boom, that was it. The plain face, with oversized writing almost makes it look like an oversized chip.
I did indeed want something slightly more unique though. Perhaps an edgespot of some sort? Again not traditional, but something slightly less common... Could he do the same fade on the edgespot as he did on the face of the chip? Yep, he sure can...And my product was born.

I'm currently adding to this set to get some micro denoms, orange 5centers, and some $100's I think to safeguard the game a bit. We don't play here much more than .25/.50.

I really dig those! Nice colors and a very simply classy design.

Thank you! That’s so much what I was hoping for. I know it’s not bright and flashy like a lot of chips with a bright red, yellow and blue edgespots, all that. I wanted simple, slightly elegant. I had come up with a bunch of different designs as a plain or a solid, with no edgespots. But it wasn't quite enough. Low key is a great way of putting it. I appreciate it very much.

Dunno how I missed these before, but they are sweet. Understated, elegant, and undoubtedly easy to play with. Great design work and execution all around.
