Considering purchasing some newer chips, step up from ye ol' standard plastic suit chips, and I've stumbled into Super Diamonds as a budget but purportedly OK chip. Additionally, I feel like I've seen a number of confusing conversations about which Super Diamonds might be intended, from hot-stamping, to old Paulson clays, to super cheapo plastic deals. There are also a couple different weights listed for these chips, and I'm not precisely sure of either how accurate I should expect whatever site I might be ordering from to be, or which version of the particular chip I might be looking at.

I know, everyone always says samples, but if I'm considering just spending something like 40-50 bucks on these, paying to have a sample sent of some super cheap chips just seems silly.

A couple of links, just so you know what I'm looking at. There does seem to be some difference in the available colors, so I don't know if that suggests what version the chips might be either.

http://www.chipcave.com/super-diamond-poker-chips/#customer-reviews - listed as 8.5g
http://www.pokerchipswholesale.com/bulk-poker-chips/super-diamond-8-5-gram.html - listed as 8.5g
http://www.pokerchipmania.com/clay-poker-chips/super-diamond-poker-chips/ - listed as 9g

I realize this isn't for a whole lot of money, so it's not exactly a big issue, but I got the feeling that there was a lot going on w/ the super diamonds that I just wasn't aware of. A simple primer would be greatly appreciated.

Geneally speaking.....
  • Heavier is better. 9g > 8g
  • More expensive is better.
  • A more reputable seller (not an online drop-shipper) is better.
That said, I wouldnt trust anything posted by most vendors regarding weights, or even pictures as being accurate.

Short of a known/trusted buyer testimonial, the only way to be sure of what you are ordering from any given vendor is to first get samples. It's up to you whether or not it's worth avoiding the risk of getting something you don't really want.

They are better than dice chips. They can be hot stamped but at a higher price. Discount casino gear is where I purchased some of these a long time ago, they were very reputable but that was a long time ago. I have a few racks left but have not used them in years. Hope this is the beginning of "the sickness" like it was for me.

I also have used discountcasinogear.com for the ABS blanks used in my current set. They were fine to work with.

Super diamonds were my first "big" set. Had 100 for college tournaments in official wsop colors :). I think they're better than most in this price range.

There are different types of Super Diamonds, too.

The "normal" ones have a very wide outer ring that has the injection mold pip inside it. They typically weigh 8g.

The "superior" ones have a balanced width in the inner and outer ring flanking the diamonds. The injection mold pip is on the side of the chip, not the face. They typically weigh slightly more at 8.5-9g. They sound better. I even think they sound better than most China Clays. They were produced much earlier, too - probably 40+ years old.

This x 1000

I remember my first set of super diamonds. The whites, reds, and greens were just meh. The blacks and purples were incredible. Completely different (better) look, feel, and sound.

This was back in 2006-ish. No idea how to differentiate between the two when shopping online. If I could guarantee piles and piles of the black and purple version I would be in hog heaven (whatever that means).

My Super Diamonds arrived a week ago. I got then from eBay. I live in germany and there are zero online shops who does sell them. So I was pretty lucky to find a german seller. Price was 5c/ chip plus shipping costs.

I owned a set of faux "clay" chips as well as as a hotstamped BCC t-mold chips.

Compared to the Faux, the Super Diamonds have a more hard plastic feel but the Diamond mold looks so much better then the Dice mold.
The Super Diamonds stack very good. This was a big concern for me. The white chips feel very chalkey during shuffeling. I had the same experience with the white Faux chips. The dimple is less visibel to me.

Edges of the Super Diamonds are very sharp. Which is realy bad thing and I dont think they will be less sharp by use.

An other negatic thing is that the edges look very plastic and shiny. Hard to descripe...
While the crosshatch has a realy nice look with a matt look.

In comparison to the t-mold, the t-mold got obviously a real clay feel. The shuffel better and so on. However the price difference is so big :)

My personal conclusion is that if you want to buy a plain solid poker chip without label and hotstamp the Super Diamond is your brst choice. There are pretty much no Faux available and for the price of real clay solid chips I think you have better options to spend you money in.

They look great, I wanted to get these for a traveling tournament set but wanted labels. How do they feel with labels on them? They look amazing.

The labels I have are from a for former label maker(s) They still stack at 20 and they worked well. My thing was that the ones with the bigger Diamonds were always better.

Super diamonds have been made by many different manufactuters over the years. Some can be hot stamped some cannot. Some have a very slight recess to take a very thin label without sticking up. Most, including mine, do not. The weight, design, color, shine, and plastic/clay feel all vary slightly between manufactuters/production runs. I've bought them on three different occasions and each time they were slightly different. That said, I like them much, much better than dice chips. They feel better, stack better, and look better for about the same price. I think they are preferable to some of the other cheap metal slug ABS plastic chips also. And I've been using them for over 14 years and they have no signs of wear. I'm glad I bought them, I have gotten my money's worth many times over. However, I have Royals pre-ordered and look forward to retiring them in favor of better chips.

Because they are so inexpensive I am thinking about using a forstners bit and in my drill press just take a little off for the label. Just an idea. Thanks to everyone that replied with so much information.

Are the labels you used paper or vinyl and laminated or unlaminated. Thanks in advance!
