I've been messing around with Inkscape and Youtube tutorials, but can't figure out how to trace an existing image and turn it into a vector image. This is for a CPC add on of quarters and $1s (might order a handful of $5s-$500s with the same as replicas for samples if possible and there is any interest) to some existing chips.

Can anyone help me out with this? I can't pay anything but would send you a sample set of the chips when the order arrives.

So you want to just trace the inlay design? Are you then going to manipulate the design or you just want the vector as line work? Are you working to setup files for all of the denominations? You may be able to use a good scan of the building and bring that into the background of a vector design program and then just add the text in the vector program. Knowing your final design intent would be helpful. I don't know the program you mentioned, I use Adobe products.

The best way is to re-draw the image. It's more time consuming but gives you a better result. You can do an image trace in illustrator which will take a JPEG and create the vector points. This method is quick but does not normally produce a clean image that is easy to manipulate.

I've tried using the live trace feature, but as you say it doesn't produce very clean results. On the other hand, I find it very difficult to draw using a mouse..

100% agree

Practice makes perfect. If I am trying to copy an image in illustrator, I make a black and white opaque version and do my own trace. Kind of like using tracing paper

I might give redrawing it a shot tonight since it's a fairly simple line drawing as opposed to newer style inlays. Thanks.

Redrawing is the way to go. Inkscape should be fine. It would help to start with a much higher resolution scan. 2000x2000 just covering the inlay would be best. For me, the hardest part is always finding fonts that match.

I completely agree with all the suggestions to redraw the image... but I ran it through Inkscapes Bitmap tracer and got this. Kinda cool but probably not what you're looking for.
