looking for advise\opinions of different value/mid range sets (1 Viewer)

Milanos: get a sample set. I like the feel, sound, and quality, but the mold impressions were often shallow (sometimes flat), and I don't like the "pastel" quality of many of the colors.

Ironically, I think "real clay" makers try hard to get a vibrant color, and are jealous of plastics, while "china clay" makers are trying to make it look like pressed clay, and tone down their colors.

Sunfly/ceramics: the shiny edges are a definite thing on Sunfly. It makes stacks look better, but the inconsistency between face tone and edge tone irks some people. I was able to live with the shiny, and would own a set of Venerati (besides my samples set) despite that - but I couldn't deal with the lack of edge spot alignment, especially on the $1 chip!

That's my biggest beef with a lot of ceramic designs - they have a design which suggests edge spots (or other wrap-around art), but they're not made with alignment. That's part of why I'm excited about the upcoming Nine Dragons chips from GOCC.

So again, the advice comes down to this: get samples. I thought I'd be buying Milanos until I got the samples and was unhappy with the colors and mold (I just like deeper). I thought I'd be buying Veneratis until I saw the edge alignment. Others balk at those same chip sets for entirely different reasons. Which reason will be yours? Or will you just love them?

I can make either work if I have to.. would most likely start at micro stakes to get more people into the game so .5/.10 but could make it work with .25/.25 or something. would like to be as flexible as possible. and will most defiantly be adding chips later, and slowly upgrading my sets as time goes on :)

id go with .25, $1, $5, and $25 chips for an all around set. you can also play T400 or similar formats.

if .25/.25 blinds are too high for some players, play a .10/.20 game using $1 chips as dimes. divide by 10 when you cash out. $20 gets you $200 in chips. might get some complaints at first but works well and hopefully it will play like a $1/$2.

you could also get a tournament set (25, 100, 500, 1000, 5000 or better yet 25, 100, 500, 2000) and play them as cents but you will probably play cash games more often than tournaments and a cash set can also be used for tournaments.

Yea if those 9 dragons are as nice as the pics I'm gonna be hopeing someone decides to sell there set

You should be able to buy them directly from GOCC.
Gonna have to get me some samples then :)

:edit :

Meh must be over tiered I'm at work. Can't find anything on the website..

Probably out of my budget right now anyway

GOCC doesn't show their stock chips on their site. They primarily manufacture for other vendors and casinos.

You can find the chips they sell here on the forums - as a courtesy, they offer chips for sale to chippers, including all their clearance sales when discontinuing a line.

You won't find the Nine Dragons set listed anywhere, yet, because it's new - the group buy was the first run / presale for those. They're currently in production - or were, as of the end of last week. They may be complete, now.

Tommy may have extra sample sets - you can ping him about them.

ok cool thanks. still learning how some of this works...

on another note i think I'm becoming addicted to sample sets (only cause I can't currently afford bigger sets lol)

I know what you mean. I have to resist buying a sample set of every custom set someone else makes, or I'll never save up for my own customs.

This. So much this. At this point, I'm limiting it based on mold or base colours I'm interested in. But I suspect I'd be well on the way to a custom set if I didn't buy samples.

I'm trying to do that, too, but I'm also getting sets where I really like some aspect - maybe the inlay, or the spotting, or the colors, or something non-standard...

I hope to eventually hire a local artist/designer who does not actually do poker chips to work on the customs with me. I want to bring a fresh eye into the process - but, since they won't be a chipper, I want a good collection of a variety of ideas to show them, for inspiration and background.

I'm kind of in the same boat on that, looking at all the amazing customs sets on here.. I have a few Ideas but I'm no artist, so I'm hoping to find someone to try and get some designs started... be a while before i can afford to have them made though.

so just to update I got one of the absolute ceramic sets, should be on its way.. and I have the current high bid on the CPS tourney set.. but I can use the CPS set as a cash set till I can get a dedicated cash set. and I've become a chip junkie. I have lots of samples but constantly want more... Really want to get samples sets of some of the amazing custom sets you guys have out there.

I'm trying to be a discerning chip junkie... and failing. It may be a good thing I'm going through this phase while on limited funds.

I sold my Paulson hot-stamp solids (Fun Nites) because I much prefer spots and don't care for hot stamps.

I have a hold-me-over cash set until I buy a dream, another hold-me-over tourney set which may never get upgraded, because I almost never host tourneys, and I have a Nine Dragons micro tourney set - intended for single-table Turbos.

Now I'm agonizing over upgrading my cash set to Majestics, or waiting until I'm ready for customs/Iron Bank. The Majestics are a great deal on presale, and I really like them... but by the time they ship, I'll probably be ready to buy customs. Of course, I may need more months to find the artist, collaborate, and then will need to wait months for them to come in... so maybe I'll get a few months of use out of the Majestics?

(Oh, and I have a 2000 piece cheapie set for bigger tourneys, which I don't run any more. I should dump those.)

FWIW, I have bought/sold more chips/sets that never got used even once than the number of chips/sets I have currently (down to about 20K or so). So no real surprise, but I vote "buy".

I just finished purging all my CCs other than CPS (sold Milanos a while back because I hated them, sold my Pharaoh's and Desert Palms recently) and I'm still considering the Majestics. Even with a custom order on the way! I will probably wait and see what the quality is like and just pay more for a set if I'm interested still.

of the CC's I've sampled so far I think the pharaohs are my favorite I don't mind the milanos they are nice if a little plain. I like the CPS set. hopping there is no more bidding.. but the auction is till the end of the month.

next month will start another round of samples, and maybe I'll order a table :)

*off topic* wish me luck today is my audition for poker dealer!

Good luck!

Don't worry about handling the chips or cards - nerves only make that worse, and honestly, that's not the part that people usually screw up, anyway. Relax and be smooth, not fast. Nerves will make you fast enough.

Concentrate on calling the game action calmly without being obtrusive. If you can keep the game flowing in an agreeable way while raking the pot, you're golden.

(Assuming you don't make any real blunders.)

Now I'm agonizing over upgrading my cash set to Majestics

I have no idea about the state of your wallet but my general encouragement to you and anyone else feeling something similar is, if you can afford it, do it. It is rare that you get an opportunity to purchase a quality 500pc set at $150, and doing so helps out a site sponsor which just helps us all in the long run. Get a nice common-breakdown set, and if you don't like it you can always dump it later on at cost or even slightly above.

Goodness knows I have no need for these chips. Don't care. Snap call for me at $0.29/chip. Not sure if I'll get a tourney set or a cash set yet, but that trigger's definitely gettin' squeezed.

Hahahahaha...
(If you knew, you'd be laughing, too... I'm currently looking for my next job.)

an opportunity to purchase a quality 500pc set at $150

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAA.... I've talked myself down to about a thousand chips. Cash set, but I play multiple stakes in different games.
