“Their only other recourse was have their team members do it by hand, which was unbelievably slow, or order new chips,” he said. “All we have to do is sweep the dirt off and we can prolong the life of the chip.”
...
But Dubois said the company’s secret weapon is his patent-pending basket design, which can fit up to 640 chips.

And to make sure any bacteria is killed off after a wash, Dubois has a convection oven that can heat up to 170 degrees.

170 degrees sounds dangerous. Newly cleaned and warped chips coming soon to a casino near you.

Thus resulting in new chips once the dealers complain about miscounting. Yeah right like a casino will listen to dealers (or customers).

OSHA disinfection (NOT even sterilization) temperature is 180F. FYI.

They should use ethylene oxide sterilizers.

Won’t remove dirt, but will kill anything. Don’t even have to unpack chips from packaging.

UV could break down the dye pigments / fade the colours..
Would that also apply to plastics like BJ chips?

I'm skeptical of the value of attempting to disinfect chips. The article mentioned that even after cleaning and disinfecting, they could easily be recontaminated. I think people are just better off disinfecting hands and avoiding face contact.

How often should we be cleaning our home game chips? Let’s say they see six hours of play a week.
I feel most chip sets only need to be cleaned once the gunk impacts their usage. Say, if the gunk is making them stick and making them hard to break down, you might wanna clean'em.

My CPC chips really only needed a cleaning after a few years of usage in a weekly game.

Well, how clean do ya want your chips? Used dirty that enter the house, I clean. I've never had to clean a set that was new from play, but my ASMs have 600 or so games and could use a bath soon.

Would it be different for clay and plastic? I would think plastic repels dirt better since it is non-porous.

I think it would depend on the mold. Most ceramics are flat, except for some of the Sun-Fly blanks that use cards or diamonds. The non-flat ones may catch and accumulate gunk more often. Same would probably apply to plastic chips, if there's a lot of recessed lettering on the rims and such.

The Big Easy's should last me a while then before they need to be cleaned.

What i find interesting and curious about it, is that the "patent pending" racks keep the chips perpendicular (vertical) to the floor. For most of us we drop the chips into the US and the face of the chip lays flat to the floor. Did he research which way does a better cleaning and found vertical chips clean better than horizontal ones. I doubt he had it designed with the sonic heads in the side wall, the middle of the water pit would be a dead spot.

Perhaps my therory is off, but the power of cleaning comes when the micro bubbles "explode" when hitting the surface of a object. Thus wouldnt a horizontal chip have more surface exposed to the popping bubbles?

The sound waves would reflect off all solid surfaces, so orientation doesn't matter. Exposed surfaces do, however, which is why you agitate the chips in the detergent bath by stirring or spinning. I don't do constant motion. I spin and wait 10 sec, then repeat.
