I have built a used mixed cash/limit set and am using the LD $1s as a frac, but it tilts me that they are not labeled as quarters. ( Would love two racks of true fracs, but that is for another thread). I have seen some examples of others labeling LDs for various uses and was wondering...

1. Did you mill the chip first?
2. Laminated or non-laminated labels?
3. Other issues / concerns?

Also looking for suggestions for a casino to label them as. Hopefully something that gear already has artwork for or artwork that is easily available. I'm not looking to commission new art for this set. Restrictions are that the casino can not match any casino I already have in my set. So far my set is

$1 Horseshoe Cleveland
$5 Garden City
$25 Grand Vic
$100 Aztar IN

I also have a rack of PCA $0.50s that don't always come into play but would rather no use that casino as the frac either.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I used Lucky Derby $5's to make fracs. Because they were SO worn, they didn't need to be milled - the hot stamps were all worn smooth. On the other hand, because they were SO worn, I could only use non-laminated labels - there wasn't enough depth in the recesses to use laminated inlays, without creating spinners.

And for some extra 2 cents, I think you should just buy some real casino fracs. That's the beauty of having a mixed casino set - you can use any fracs with it. People usually do relabels to create non-existant fracs to match their casino set. It's not cheap. Labels from Gear are 30 cents per chip, I think. Add shipping, and you're looking at around $40 before you've even bought your chips. Somebody sold a rack of fracks on the classifieds this morning for $150, I think. Is it really worth it to you to spend $100ish or more to create fake fracs, when you could buy real ones for not too much more?

Yes to this. I did the same thing with Lucky Derby $1 to make 200 Horseshoe quarters by Gear. Others have done the same thing.

Unlaminated labels are 0.10 USD each, i.e. 0.20 USD per chip. A rack's worth of labels + shipping would cost 24 USD.

Well I already have the LDs so I'm trying to used them, love the color and they look great with the rest of the set. But I agree, real fracs would be my preference and ultimately what I'll wind up with. I'm just having trouble locating 2 racks of used fracs for not too much cash. I built this mixed set on the cheap, something like $0.70/$0.80 a chip so far and want to try and keep it around there. So for now I'm just trying to consider options with a relabel to get me off tilt.

I wonder if anyone ever relabeled a fractional chip as a completely different casino just so it would fit into a mixed set with all different casinos.

How about a $0.25 cent label for Casablanca, Empress, or PCA? Those are some of the more common closed casino chip sets out there, albeit from older original sales, but they might be easier for you to sell, if you ever choose to sell the labeled fracs. Here's what the Lucky Derby $1 looks like next to the some available denoms in the three casinos above. (Casa $1s just don't exist in any obtainable quantity).
