Royal Flush
Greetings! I've been on for a while and thought I'd jump on in here and introduce myself. My name is Kevin, I'm in Oklahoma, north of Tulsa, and starting to get this chip bug thing, although I don't think I'll ever go to some of the extremes that I've seen here, and I haven't seen much yet I'm sure!
I play in a couple of home games, a PLO on Monday nights that has been going for almost a year now, and a Thursday night game that has been going steadily for over 10 years now! The PLO is one table, 10 max, and the Thursday game is a gang of about 25 people, with a typical night being about 17 or 18. Both games start with 15,000 in chips, 10,000 is live and 5000 is your "rebuy" if you go out before first break, and your "addon" at first break if you don't. We've found this lets us play a good game, and suffer some bad beats early without having a total rebuy policy that gets abused and promotes reckless play. We also have a $1.00 "rabbit" or "show me" fee to discourage those things and keep things moving along, this goes into a bad beat that we haven't hit for a few years now.
I play in some of the Oklahoma casino's, mostly tournaments, hardly ever in the cash games. I've had some success, monied in World Poker tour event, Heartland Poker Tour event, and Poker Night in America event, in addition to quite a few no-name local weekday tournaments in the Casinos. Played the Seniors WSOP event this year, but that cash has eluded me so far. Typically I play in 4-5 tournaments a week.
I'm working to get our home group out of Dice Chip Hell, and I'll show you some of that in a few pictures below. I'm looking to get into some Milano's or similar CC chips, just can't afford the Paulson or Chipco route yet, so if someone has some sets laying around gathering dust and wouldn't mind hooking a newbie up let me know!
I prefer Modiano cards, but Copaqs are fine, Kems and the rest are a little slick and thin for me. I can't hardly play with paper anymore, which is a shame because I've collected quite a few of the Theory 11 and Ellusionist decks over the years, but that's how it is.
Our group has built our own table tops, they fold since none of us dedicate rooms to our poker yet, but we've made some sturdy ones that hold up well.
Chips - oh yes chips. Well for years it has been dice chips. Servicable, stackable, shuffable, they do the job. But I've recently had a little monkey start riding my back, and he's insistent that I get better equipment, and he never stops.
What I've managed so far are Claysmith's and Nexgens, and I prefer to use the heavy ones (holdover from dice, I know) so, I've got a set of the Bluff Canyon and a set of the Showdowns. This has steered my group towards supporting an upgrade, and I'm looking forward to the journey ahead as I get better, then get much better, then eventually get the best chips I can afford and feel comfortable with people using!
So on to a few pictures:
This is part of my current storage, and the blank spot on the shelf is where 2600 dice chip used to set, until I sold them last week on eBay, and is where I hope to put a set of Milano's or CPS chips soon. Or both!
Not pictured is the set of 1000 dice plaques I have (excessive I know), the over 7000 Super Diamonds I have (Faro Layout and Chuck-a-luck), and the 2000 chips I have at a house in NM.
My wife is a Saint. Helps that she plays as well. But she still complains every once in a while about the space.
Sorry this is so long!
Kevin
