With over 2700 people left in the Main Event, heading into day 3, Phil Ivey is sitting on the 26th biggest stack.
The only thing worse than sitting down on day 3 and seeing Phil Ivey at your table, is seeing Phil Ivey with a huge stack.
Good luck rest of the field!

What’s the story with the humphreys? I know theyre fans and they come to watch him play but why?

From Bluff Magazine - "We first met Phil in Atlantic city, when he was playing the low limit games, playing 1/5 Stud. He was only 17. I started playing in a tournament with him and we got friendly, and from there on we played with him in the same games. Then he moved to Vegas, he got better and we didn’t,” said Pat laughing.

I don’t know the full story, just that they were fans of his since he played as an underaged guy named Jerome in AC.
Also, apparently she’s sick, so they’re not there this year. Which totally stinks if he goes deep.

Do they travel just to watch him play? Or are they there to play too and then just rail him?

My money is on Chino rheem going deeper than Ivey. I know he has a lot of drama with debt, but he’s a solid holdem tourney player

@RocAFella1 story sound right. I don't think the Humphries are here this year though (not at Day 2 at least). We were watching Ivey, and they were no where to be seen. We've met them and talked to them a couple times. GREAT people!!

From past years.

They traveled just to watch him play. In the past, they were there every day.

Chino’s great. I’m pretty sure he’s made at least one deep run in the Main. Maybe two. But I haven’t heard his name this week. Does he have a big stack?

He final tabled the ME in 08, I remember watching that one. He went out in 7th for $1.7mil.

He cashed another year in 193rd but not a huge prize.

Another big score of his was the WPT Season 7 Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic where he took 1st for $1.5mil.

A great hold 'em player but apparently a huge degen. There's a really long thread on 2+2 of him owing lots of people large sums of money. Once it came out to the public eye, it was said when he took 1st in the Epic Poker League 6 Max Tournament for $1mil, people were waiting at the cage for him to cash and pay back money.

From his Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rheem

In August 2011, Rheem won the $20,000 buy-in 6-Max No Limit Hold'em tournament at the inaugural Epic Poker League earning $1,000,000.[6][7] One week later his membership in the league was placed on probation.[8] Admittingly owing several "fellow" poker pros considerable debts, he has since made payments on said debts.[9]

If you read the thread, he's considered among his peers to be the stereotypical sociopath with a gambling problem. All of this drama went on in 2011, so I'm not aware if there's been any updates or if he's "made good" but he's considered a pretty scummy person, albeit a good player.

everyone knows Ivey is an awesome player, but he's not top tier in Holdem. I can't remember, but i'm pretty sure he doesnt have any bracelets in Holdem. I think mostly in omaha and stud...not sure though

That’s true, no Holdem bracelets. But you hardly need to be a Holdem expert specialist to win the Main Event.

LOL Phil is not good at holdem? The main event has over 8k entrants per year, all of these WSOP events are donkaments and require a tremendous amount of luck to win a bracelet.

A few years ago, Matt Hawrilenko was widely regarded as the best heads up limit holdem player in the world. Phil Ivey played him for two days straight and took over a million dollars from him. I believe Phil is still a feared holdem player.

I don’t mean to condescend saying he’s not good at holdem and I’m not using the fact that he hasn’t won the main event as my data. None of his 10 wsop bracelets are in holdem. He is definitely feared, but he does not specialize in holdem tourneys. There are pros Like helmuth who, even though we criticize him, specializes in holdem. I haven’t checked but I’m sure most all of helmuths bracelets are in holdem. And even amongst holdem players, some specialize in cash games (Ivey) some focus on tournaments (helmuth).

There's some truth to what you're saying, but maybe not much sense. Take a look at his Hendon page. He's won over ten million dollars in NLHE tournaments. http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=127

Ivey's Run in the Main Event Comes to an End

Phil Ivey opened to 22,000 from middle position and Brian Altman three-bet to 75,000 in the hijack. The action folded back to Ivey who made the call to see a flop of :qc::js::2s:.

Ivey check-called a bet of 60,000 from Altman and the :8s: landed on the turn. Both players checked to the :3d: on the river and Ivey checked one more time. Altman stuck in a bet of 195,000 and Ivey check-raised all in for 629,000. Altman thought for over a minute and then made the call.

"Good call," Ivey said. Altman turned over :qs::jc: and Ivey was unable to beat it. Ivey held :9s::9c: and shipped the rest of his chips to Altman in the last hand before the dinner break.

Yeah that was a head-scratcher

I don't understand the play. Two overs and a flush draw and a RRAI into a guy who is betting? If you're repping the flush, bet when the 3rd spade hits the turn. He was in for 135k with 629k back. Blinds were 5k/10k/1k. Still plenty of play in that stack and no need to shove. Would Ivey really check the flush turn *and* check-raise the river if he held a flush? Seems like it wasn't even that hard of a call for his opponent. Did he put his opponent on a bigger pair and figured he could get him to fold a Q or J?

I imagine a guy like Ivey does his fair share of bullying amateurs based on his image. I just don't see how this was necessary.

He needed to call 195k with 365k in the pot. I assume (with the raise and the comment after the call) that he knew he wasn't good. So if he knows he's behind, doesn't he realize that his story doesn't make sense?

I thought the line was sound but the gambit was unnecessarily risky at that point. Ivey’s edge over the remaining field with a deep stack is significant, however this kind of play is a huge part of that edge. The turn check looks very trappy, and top 2 doesn’t feel so strong in this spot. Sad to see him go here.

Overall it’s a sick bluff spot. 99s double blocks the possibilities, and Ivey is capable of playing anything the same way. Usually that play gets through. Sure takes a lot to bluff 100bbs at this point in the ME. He was playing to win so good for him. It was a great call as well with the flush and straight possibilities. The fact that villain tanked for a bit shows how difficult it is to make correct plays at this depth of the event, alone against a guy like Ivey.

^ exactly my thinking, on all points.

A one-minute tank isn't really that much of a tank.

I don't disagree with any of your points, @Ellasdaddy, but the thing I agree with most is that it was an unnecessary risk. It really only works if villain has one pair, and would villain be raising pre, betting the flop and leading the turn with only a pair, against Phil Ivey?
