We are on a tiny island in Belize this week. I have an eBay auction to chase and perhaps pay for.

Is this a good idea? If it matters, I am using an iPad.

The local WiFi is password protected, but in the end it is a hotel and the locals could easily know the way in. I use hotel in the loosest possible way. A few rooms, there are no cars, trivial roads and something like a thousand people.

On the plus side, it is lobster season here and I have gotten one each day so far.

No poker either

We and the pastor who married us have been to Belize many times and engaged in eCommerce via wifi without incident. YMMV.

This is no different than drinking the water. No problem at all, until it is a huge one.

Odds are, you're fine, and you may even be safer than you might be in a larger center, expect variance.

HTTPS is designed to be secure even if the network between you and the site is compromised. I wouldn't be overly concerned about local hackers. You probably have just as much risk from attacks based in Russia or China while you're in Belize. That's just my take on things.

If overly concerned, change your password, then check your personal settings (for any unauthorized changes) and change the password again when you get home. And don't pay (presumably with PayPal) until you get back, either.

Can't help you with the water issue.

It was a complete failure. eBay would not accept my log in and when I forced a password change my webmail told me it would allow access from my current location.

Grrr. No other bids either
