Hello, new here. I have been interested In getting a 500 chip set of nicer chips but i find it overwhelming to pick a style, and i was toying with the idea if have a different brands of chips to complete one set. I know i sounds goofy, I'm not entirely sold on the idea myself, but it might be interesting to pick them up a barrel at a time from different establishments. Thoughts? Thanks

Welcome to PCF!!! When I first joined, I thought it was very tacky to have what's called a mixed set, which is a different denomination from different casinos. I soon came to learn that this is actually one of the coolest things that you can do, because it really lets you choose the colors and edge spots that you want in your collection.

With that said, I feel that the reason that it works so well is because most people don't mix different molds. So if you're looking to mix chips from completely different manufacturers, I don't know if you would be happy with the result.

Edit: to be a bit more concrete in my answer above, consider the differences in the way that the edges of the chips feel, and even the height of the chips. You may end up with stacks that are different heights even with the same number of chips. It might feel weird to grab a one and a five because they feel completely different.

I couldn't do it myself, but to each their own. It would personally bug me seeing the different labels on the chips.

I love mixed sets (same mold). Here's what my current one looks like.

It bugs me when people call inlays labels, especially when one of the main benefits of a mixed set is that you don’t have to resort to using labels.

Welcome to PCF!!

I tend to agree with BearMetal. I think it could be really cool to have a mixed set, but would stick with a single mold. I think mixing molds and especially manufacturers would be something you would probably not be happy with.

I am pretty new myself, but I think a mixed set can be very cool and I’ve seen pics of some really nice mixed sets from other members.

i am building a mixed set myself and it’s a lot of fun experimenting with what works, what I like, swapping chips out, etc.

If you're talking about chips from different manufacturers, I would just say that it isn't a very popular thing to do around here. But people do it. And in fact, some casinos do it too.
Do what you want; it's your game.

i see no problem with mixed sets as long as they have the same mold. mixed molds and manufacturers would bother me

Thanks for the feedback! I’m ordered a few samples backs and 2 barrels of some but it would

Thank you for the feedback! I’ve been order some Sample sets and a few barrels of some chips to get a feel. Just wanted to hear what the people had to say before I start (Slowly) building my new set. Thank you all for the advice.

Personally I wouldn't do a set of mixed house molds either. Mixed casinos is fine, just want uniform molds
Every house set I’ve personally encountered, at least ones made by Paulson or C&J, have the same stack height. I mix 3 house molds with 3 THC denoms and they stack the same.

Manufacturer is the real problem I think—either stack height or material are bound to differ in that case

I think most that have mixed sets so it because it is easier/less expensive rather than because they actually like it better than a set with uniform inlays.

Personally, I am not much of a fan, but I get it and in some cases it works rather well.

Sample sets is "the way" - but don't stop your posts there. Let us know what you got and what you think about them. If we own those chips, we're happy to give our feedback on them.

I think a mixed set is totally fine if it fits your needs and works for your game. Ie. You're actually using them.

If it's purely for collecting, then maybe it's a bit weird to have a mixture from different casinos. Especially if it's a bunch of random casinos from Ohio, Michigan or Kansas or some other place that really has no historical relevance or personal connection.

Mixed set is more common than you think, it is definitely ok to have mixed casino set in the same set.

However if you going for different set for say same $1 demo, you have to at least get them all in the same color. It will be confusing if there is white blue pink $1 all in the same set

I am doing it a barrel at a time

10 different casinos of white chips, green, red and 2 barrels of black chips
al the 10 different white chips will have different edge spots but will be predominantly white..right now I have Harrah's, HSI, Jack Detroit and Cincinnati, lady luck, Mohegan, Circa

Most on hert will not like it, but then again it is what I want, my friends wont care one way or the other
I am trying to do it as cheap as possible, trying to stay under a $1.50 a chip if not lower

Good luck and you do you, make your self happy, you can always change directions and go another way if you start and don't like it

I’ve haven’t seen the 50c chip - I’ll need to check it out!

You can always murder them and relabel as well...That's my plan! It's your set and you can do anything you want!

Caution on mixed molds- they may have different diameters, which impacts handling.

I tried it and it failed for me.

If they're gonna see the felt, consistency is of modest importance. The truth is though unless your game is comprised of a bunch of chippers, most people aren't going to care much about the chips you're using.

The only real hard and fast rule is don't mix clays and ceramics in the same set. This is akin to crossing the streams in your proton-packs - and according to the venerable @detroitdad - is a sin punishable by death or castration.
