So, a lot of you guys have really great custom chip designs and I love seeing all the sweet pr0n on the site.

If I really like someone's custom chip design, is it possible to call up CPC and say, "hey you made this really great set for person A, I want to get a set made of that design."

As long as person A doesn't care, is that ok to do?

If you got written approval from the owner of the design, then yes. I'd be surprised if anyone would give away their custom design though.

I've been asked about using artwork from two of my custom sets in the past. IMO it's first up to the owner of the artwork and then up to CPC (or other vendor) to decide if they actually want to do it.

Don't get me wrong, I've been flattered in both instances. But why not come up with something on your own?

Depends. By design, do you mean the inlay? Mold/Base/Spot patterns and colors? Everything?

Your first call should be to Person A to see if they mind. If they don't, and you want to copy the inlay, then you should find out who designed the inlay and get their permission to use it.

If you don't want to copy the inlay but just want to copy everything else, you can technically do that w/o the original chip designer's permission, but doing so wholesale w/o permission and w/o tweaks to make it your own is something of a jerk move.

Spots and colors are fair game, though I believe the color/pattern/mold pattern combos can be calculated into trillions of options. It is extremely unlikely you would want the exact same thing over an entire set

But why not come up with something on your own?

Because some people are born with Z-E-R-O creativity. Zip, zilch, none. That's me. I certainly have opinions about what looks good to me and what doesn't. But "coming up with something" is simply not a skill in my DNA.

I feel the same way when it comes to this kind of shit. Thank god for designers!!!!

I felt that way for a long time, but I realized I have a creative brain but lack the skills to make whats in my head appear in real life...well for chip design at least

My experience with things that need designwork has been similar to this. But that's why good designers are worth every penny they get paid to do what they do. A good designer can take a bunch of ideas and words that you throw at them, noodle it, and come up with a few ideas. Then help you iterate on that process until you have something awesome staring you in the face. Usually the conversations start with "tell me some shit you really like"

You'd be amazed what a talented designer can do with very little to start. Check out my avatar. I rest my case.

Pretty much how my conversation went with J5, lol. I sent him this tltr email. Even apologized for it at the end. He replied that it was perfect, and then asked me to elaborate some more. It was awesome!!!!

I obviously wouldn't want to have an inlay design like "Bobs Poker Haven, Atlanta GA" or something. But if someone designed a really neat generic tourney set, I might be like "hey that appeals to me! I wish I could click 'add to cart' and sit back and wait for it".

Know what I mean ? :)

Well, he did post that he wanted to make more 5's ... maybe he'd be willing to do a whole new group buy???
A man can dream i guess.

I've dropped almost 2k on chips in the last week. I'm not even pretending to look at the classifieds any longer :(

I think I spent over 1000 dollars in two weeks. Most of which went to Dennis for his sweet ass Key West set.

Right there with you. Picked up the Paulson Fan of Cards set that was on eBay.
But even so ... if that monopoly set comes up, I'm definitely diving in for it.

Michael at ASM contacted me about offering these as stock items but that never got off the ground before the Vegas doors (thankfully) closed.

The only way I could do it is if I sold my Key West and Samurai Palace set. We saw how long I left the SP set on sale last night (ten minutes) before canceling it.

I've bartered my Formula ceramic design, with modifications, for a sample set of the finished product, but I would have to think harder about using a design that I use in my home game due to security concerns. I certainly wouldn't do it for someone I know.

Anybody remember these beauties?

Not only are the designers great, but the community here is great. Crowd source it. Look at all the mockup threads. Ton's of people contribute. This usually gets a better looking set in the end as well, as you learn from the collective wisdom of the community.

I have always loved the simple classy look of these inlays. If I remember correctly someone "borrowing" this design without asking caused a stir on CT years ago.
