Is ebay a good resource for buying chips? (1 Viewer)

On the vast majority of chip sets, you’ll pay a premium for eBay. The classifieds here are a much better option if looking for a good deal.

eBay may be better if you’re looking for specific singles, but they will likely be more expensive than the same singles offered here. The selection on eBay is vast, however.

Not entirely
Saw some stuff today sell at 30-50% buy it now retail
Almost no good deals on eBay anymore.

I like eBay. The problem is that eBay takes like 15%, so most of the chips on there will be marked up by at least that much. The classifieds here really do have deals when racks are under $200

I think the bigger problem with eBay is the volume of buyers willing to pay way over the top. One could argue that is the “market rate”…but many of those sales wouldn’t approach anything near that here on PCF. Many eBay final sale prices are simply crazy money.

Well, from time to time you can scoop something nice for a decent price on eBay - but same goes for the classifieds here.

Tbh i was hoping for more stuff to surface on eBay when they waived the fees for private sellers. But didn't notice any increase in decent chips coming in.

Fuck eBay. Too much rake…
Very true. They just bumped up their percentage, but what must don't even know is, they/eBay also takes their percentage (13.5+%) on the sales tax on your sale. Even though the sales tax amount never ends up in the seller's account. Just another way for eBay to squeeze a few extra bucks out of their sellers' pockets.

eBay is great for singles and small lots. Yeah it usually costs more than what you'd pay here. But you could sit around for months or years waiting for somebody to sell something here that's probably available on eBay right now.

I don't mind paying a few points to eBay - they offer a pretty cool service. But . . .

I just got sniped ($261.25) on a beautiful set of TRKs ... was gonna take the dive; think that would have been a great deal!

Not to be that guy, but I've been buying on eBay for like 20 years, and I'd never put in a bid and hope for the best. I always put my max bid in about 4 seconds before the auction ends. Yeah, I'll still get beat by somebody using an automated sniping service who's willing to pay more, but that almost never happens.

I think it’s all just inflated. You see all the “buy it now” prices at non-starter levels for most, and you never know the quality. Here you won’t have a barrel of blaze orange THCs that some guy found at a thrift store and listed for $15.00, but it’s a much better environment overall.

Last two great deals I got on eBay were the RVCL tourney and Starlite Cruises cash sets.

A few smaller scores since like Four Queens half-pie quarters, King 8 $100s, and Eddie's Fabulous Fifties $500s, but nothing in the past few years. I don't even browse there anymore.

Don’t worry about wasting your time on eBay. Just put out a want ad for what you’re looking for, and our resident eBay vendor will start hunting them like a madman on an African safari. He won’t have any need for them other than to hold them hostage in absurd trade demands, or he’ll gladly bend you over for a massive up charge. It really has been interesting to watch him operate (and screw people over at any opportunity). #community

I just started collecting chips and have purchased about 12 off eBay. Had a couple issues though and would welcome everyone's opinion. In two instances the sellers have shipped me a chip that was similar but different than the one shown in their photo AND their description didn't say they might send a different one. Example 1: the edge spots were in a different place and not lined up as nice as the photo. Example 2: the chip was 052/500 and I was shipped 127/500 (plus the inlay was slightly off center). Am I being too picky to expect the EXACT chip in the photo if nothing is mentioned about the image essential being just a depiction of what I might receive? I definitely don't want to be an ass, but this just seems wrong to me.

All eBay ads should specify if you are either getting the exact one in the photo, or one like it. If the edgespots are a little different, I would not have too much of a problem if thats the only difference. However, if the ad showed 052/500 and didnt say anything about it being a different chip, then you should expect to get that exact chip.
It's up to you whether you want to start a refund, I'm sure eBay would back you up on both chips.

Also note that for most casino chips, there's no alignment between the inlay and the spots. As @Colquhoun said unless the seller said "or one like it" or if it was one chip when the seller had multiple available, I'd expect to get what's in the picture.

Serial numbers can be important to a buyer. You definitely have a case there. In that case, maybe reach out to the seller first saying you expected the specific serial number as pictured and see what they say.

He just offered a refund, so I started that process. Sucks because I then have to deal with the process of shipping it back and hope I receive the refund without any hiccups.

Example 1 could just be the backside. Most chips aren't front and back inlay aligned.

I've bought a lot of singles and small groups on eBay. Shipping is the real killer.

eBay used to be a good resource for chips. I snagged tons of good deals 4-5 years ago to help me wheel and deal my way into my current holdings, but I don't really see those opportunities anymore. There's very few true auctions now. Mostly BIN listings for absurd prices.
