Is converting $25 to $0.25 dumb? (1 Viewer)

1st poster here. This forum looks really helpful with good people.

Looking to purchase the right set and not satisfied with Milanos, tiki kings and poker knights samples. Looks like Paulson, cpc and gpi chips hold their value so I’m ok to spend a little more.

My goal is to play cash games ($20-$100) with denoms on the chips. I want casino quality feel and vibrance. $0.25, $1, $5

I was thinking about buying GPI elite chips from Apache, but quarters are sold out, however $25 chips are cheap. The only difference of the denom between quarters and $25 is a decimal point, and it doesn’t have a dollar sign.
.25 vs 25

So I was thinking, can I just buy the 25 denom chips and add a custom decimal to the chip.

Is that dumb? Will that kill the resale value? if this works, how should I add the decimal without ruining the chips?

I can’t find $0.25 Elite chips anywhere. I don’t see myself playing games with $25 chips (ain’t that baller) so I’m ok with knowing that option is.

Thanks for the insight. Also, if hobbyphilic is here, hola. I watched an embarrassing amount of your vids.

You have lots of different options here.

First, there are lots of people who play smaller stakes games that use $25 chips as $0.25; not uncommon at all. They don't bother to modify the chip inlay at all.

Another option is to use a non-denom chip that can be designated as a frac. Some chip series come with non-denom options. Others use a mixed set with fracs of a different "pedigree" than their other cash chips. Some have custom fracs made with aftermarket stickers that are designed to match with other chips.

It's hard to say whether resale value will be negatively affected. It depends on whether there's a demand for the final product or not, whether any permanent changes have been done to them, their condition, etc. Many variables.

Welcome to the forum

I second the recommendation to over-label chips using @Gear labels. At 20 cents per chip (10 cents per label), you’ll wind up with a professional look and unaltered chips under removable labels. This way you can select any available denomination/color chip for your frac!

Over-label example below. Live $1’s devalued by 75%! Perfect labels by Gear.

I use $25 chips as quarters all the time. Would even use a $5 chip as a nickel if the stakes are low enough.

That way a set with $1, $5, and $25 chips can cover stakes with anything from nickel blinds to .25/.50.

If you need a high denomination for a cash set, relabel a chip as a $20 rather than $25.

See my CDI set as an example of this, just minus the $20 relabel:

Yes, I’ve done it for months. No issues in .25/.50 cash game. I finally purchased fracs in the last week.

If you like the Elite chips (and will keep them forever), then go ahead and add your decimal point to the 25 chip. I'd use a very fine point Sharpie pen.

But if you think you might later resell them (and upgrade to something else), then just use the 25 chip as-is for your quarter chip without defacing it. The game will play just fine, and you won't have trouble later trying to unload altered chips that others may not want.

@JohnnyUtah If your budget allows and you like the look and feel, Key West has a 5c and a 25c chip in their lineup and they can be ordered and shipped immediately.

They cost $1.69 each for PCF members. https://www.keywestresortcasino.com/key-west-casino-chips.html

As far as your original question, I used $5, $25, $100, and $500 as 5c, 25c, $1, and $5 for years until I was able to buy/create sets with a nickle and a quarter so I see no issue with that. If you go with the elites I wouldn't modify the $25 chip at all. I also like the Idea of using a non denominated chip as the frac if you can find one. If you don't mind me asking, what is your budget, what are you playing (5c/10c, 25c/25c, 25c/50c), and how many people do you have in your game.

... and then he'll start having nightmares of $25 chips flying at you while you're running away from them. You throw rack after rack at them to keep them at bay, but there's no stopping them. A sharpie marker, in the distance, laughs.

This place is amazing. Thanks for all the feedback.

Budget, $500 - $1K assuming resale value is there. I would not be opposed to buying used either. Paulsons would be primo choice but I hear they are hard to obtain, or kind of a pain.

5-8 people games, usually closer to 5.

Now I understand why high denoms are purchased for cash sets, I didn’t know it was common to use $100 as $1, but that makes sense. I probably would avoid doing that assuming I wouldn’t be fully satisfied until I had an accurate denom set (not sure tbh)

I didn’t know about the PCF discount for key west. Thanks for sharing. I did hear about @Gear labels and will def go that route if I do that.

@JMC9389 that CDI set is stunning.

I only used the high denoms out of necessity, and only for a very friendly low stakes family game (5c/10c). At the time I could not find/afford to get a separate low stakes cash set and had to use my paulson tourney set. Once I started to go deeper down the rabbit hole, I purchased and created multiple cash sets with 5c and 25c chips that could handle my regular $1/$2 game as well as my family game and I keep the tourney sets separate. With a budget up to $1000 you should be able to find a nice set of paulsons to service your game. I would keep an eye on the classifieds, and keep in mind that you can always have a 25c chip made by relabeling. Another option is you can set up a wanted add in the classified and state exactly what you are looking for, a small/medium cash set of paulsons with a frac willing to spend $500 to $1000, and see whats out there. Good luck!!!

Welcome. Yeah, I'm just the gateway YouTuber, thanks for watching.

I agree you can go either way on this. Really depends on the group you play with. Best of luck!

So I have some dedicated cash sets with nickels and quarters that I use for my family game but I will still go the $5/$25/$100 -> 5c/25c/$1 route if I feel like playing with a different set of chips and no one ever has an issue with it.

Before covid we were playing a few times a month and my go to set has been the sun fly Mt. Top set

But the next time we play I was thinking about using the Crystal Moscow, these don't have a $ So I think of them in terms of cents.

Obviously if it was a serious game for "real" money I would use a unique cash set that I know would provide the proper level of security, but for a fun low money game I don't care about using tourney chips, or even mixed sets. To be completely honest most people don't give a crap about what chips you use, it's about me having fun using all the different sets I have just because I can. So my advice to you is to have fun with it and do what makes you happy. It does piss me off slightly when my people tell me they like the sun fly chips better than my paulsons but whatever.

Awesome work, but gotta admit, they look great as $1's, too!

I was having the same issue and no luck finding suitable fracs for my set. This is a great workaround in the meantime. Appreciate the suggestion!
