Greetings and hello from the Cyclone (or that other team) State

Been lurking around for a little while and I'm what you say a Home Poker Tourney Advocate. I find a lot of pleasure in organizing home tourneys not just for me but others as well

When the poker bug hit me I had little in way of chips or supplies. I built a very nice 10 person race track table and then upgraded my plastics to my first set of real clays, 1000 Apaches Pharoahs. While not as stellar as the some I have seen here this set is a perfect set to start I think and I'm happy with them.

But now? Well I have a little bug and am looking at expanding my chip collection but really at this time don't know exactly where this path will lead me. I have found thru reading many posts, many here just sort of fall into collecting a set and the rest is history shall we say. This world of poker chips is quit vast and I have a lot to learn but one thing is for certain I defin want to add on a tourney set that I can use and has some significant value to me historically, eye appeal, monetary or personal.

That's about it for me.

Thanks

BooRay

Welcome @BooRayUSA

Many of us started just like you. If you are truly bitten by "the Chip Bug" you are in for a ride. The symptoms start out with Cold Chills and fever anytime an epic set is up for sale! and can end with insomnia due to staring at the computer screen to make sure you see everything coming up for sale. You may also suffer from RAIDS.........

Okay it is an acronym which stands for - Recently Acquired Income Deficiency Syndrome

This can all be avoided by selling your house, car and first born because more money and more chips is the only cure.

Okay it's not really that bad............. or is it?

Welcome and have fun. Many great folks here ready and willing to help you with your new obsession!

It will lead you down the rabbit hole of course. Now I really must go, I'm late....

"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

Welcome to Poker Chip Forum!

Welcome to the forum.

Well, jump right in and get a CPC set (custom), ha!

But honestly, for a tourney set, it's hard to beat a China Clay set for value. Paulson tourney sets are pricey. Primarily due to rising costs of Paulson chips lately, and also because the tourney sets more often involve higher denominations, and higher denom Paulsons often cost much more (due to condition and rarity). So a Paulson tourney set is not going to be cheap.

The alternative is going full on custom (with CPC). The drawback is that while a Paulson set will almost always retain their value, the CPC set will diminish in value from the start. Not many people are going to pay you retail for your custom/personalized set, when they can pay retail and have their own set designed to their liking.

If money is no object, then go Custom. However, take your time designing it. Get feedback from the community, and I'd strongly recommend attending a meetup, so you get experience handling/playing several custom sets (to get a feel for the mold/designs that strike your fancy).

Lastly, ya gotta post a thread detailing your new table build. I'm assuming you're going to move away from the racetrack at some point (if you hang out here for any length of time). The prevailing sentiments here are that racetracks are pretty, but play like crap (unless that's all you know). Many drawbacks to the racetrack table... Most prefer the full felt design. But that's a thread all on it's own, lol...

Agree with the racetrack issues. Next build will be full felt for sure. It's nice but I've had issues already with the track and rail and cards getting lost as well as chip management being to far into playing area

Hi Ray. I’m in Ankeny. Like you I’m a brand new chipper and am starting with Pharaohs Club chips too. I did just purchase a tiny heads up set of Key West chips and I’ll just say....Yum.

Welcome aboard. I'm heading to western Iowa for work next week.

Hiya Abby. How you enjoying this fine state so far?

I've been exploring the area and am enjoying it so far. Unpacking is going slowly. The farmers markets are fantastic -- I've enjoyed chatting with the growers and pie bakers and even a beekeeper! I'm even closer to good shopping (Jordan Creek) than I was in Illinois.

The only thing I miss from Illinois is the weekly poker game, but I'm working on that. I haven't checked out the casino yet.

Sounds like you’re settling in well. Iowa really is what you make it. I wish I had some advice on a poker game but I’m a newbie to this community and with 2 boys still in diapers there’s not much time left in the day. I’ve been to Prairie Meadows a few times but never played poker there.
