***Long post, sorry if I'm doing this introduction thing wrong.

Since I'm not sure where I posted my original post(noob), lets consider this my actual original introduction post on PCF.

To keep the sob story short, I'm a 25-yr old grad student and the oldest of 6 kids. I'm the patriarch of the family as we don't have any remaining parents or grand parents. I was first introduced to poker after my grandmother took me on a trip to Vegas for my 21st birthday (It was just an excuse for her to see Elton John, but thank God for that man!). After that trip, and bonding with my grandmother over the ins and outs of poker, I was hooked.

The first hand of poker I ever played was in a $60 tournament at the Flamingo. I bought in late having no real clue how to play; just did it because my grandmother was playing and thought she could help. They seated me at a different table and to this day, I will never forget the feeling of being pushed around and crushed on THE VERY FIRST HAND. I had 3s5s, started with the customary $20k in chips at 200-400b. I was in late position, and player ahead 3-bet to $1200, which I called. Big blind shoved (had me covered), everybody else folded and I didn't want to give up $1200 for nothing so I called and got crushed by Kings.

While we made the Vegas trip an annual thing, I would drive my grandmother to casinos in Eagle Pass, TX and Lake Charles, LA often. It's a beautiful game that I enjoy playing more than anything else. My grandmother passed away last May and it was pretty crushing. She was the only remaining "parent" of our family and losing her meant I needed to step up. Without my casino partner, and in need of something to keep the family close (we don't live under the same room), I invested in a poker set, table, shuffler, etc. and host a once/week family tournament. Having the family around a table for a few hours once a week has been huge for all of us.

My love of all things poker brought me here and I hope to continue sharing stories like this and maybe secure a quality set if I'm ever quick enough to see it. Reading some other posts on here has already made me excited to have found this group.

Looking forward to the discussion!

Oh, I know this ride. It's a very quick one. :)

Welcome and I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother. I lost mine over a year ago and know how overwhelming that can be. I hope you'll find something here to help keep your happy memories alive and make many more with your family.

The ride was over before I knew it, put poker is like a theme park with no exit! On to the next ride.

Of all the positive influences she's had on my life, I'm sure she would be thrilled to know I'm writing about my love of poker because of her! haha

Hello! Good to see Texas in the house. Some of the friendliest folks I've ever met.
I may be a homer but playing a cash game at card house here is much more friendly than those I've experienced in the confines of Vegas! And that's after accounting for the fact that you'll never see a flop for less than $12 at $1-$2 NL.

Welcome! Fantastic story and thanks for sharing! Hope you get some samples to try out and find a great set to your liking! There's also a member location page if home games interest you you may be able to link up with nearby folks.

Cheers! Brie

Thanks for the heads up! Going to look for that right now. I know of nobody personally who would even play once every two weeks. Would love to find a weekly game/host one.

Have samples in abundance. Hoping to secure my first full-set someday. Currently working on Isle of Capris, Kansas City, MO, Paulson's.

Appreciate you taking the time to reach out!

Welcome to PCF and sorry for the loss of your grandmother. It’s wonderful that you got to spend so much time with her and get introduced to such a fun game! I lost my father early as well and just want to say how impressive I think it is that you are able to step up and help your siblings, keep your family close, and do grad school all at the same time. Good luck on building your next set and see you around the forum!

Appreciate the kind words, John.

Looking forward to it!

Welcome to the forum, Triston. and that's a really great story about your grandma and how it got you into the poker world. Love that it helps keep the family in touch. It helps a lot with my friends as we make a reason to get out once in a while to socialize over a game of poker too.

I also love Corpus Christi. I go there and Port Aransas a few times a year for fishing and beach with the family.

Always nice to hear from someone who’s been to Corpus before.

Maybe next time you’re here, I’ll have a great set ready to host you and your family. Not like there’s much else to do here once night hits!

Welcome aboard! Thanks for sharing your story with us. Sounds like a great family game. Grandma would be honored.
