The Upper and Lower Vaults hve arrived; at long last The Armory has a proper home.

Thanks to @courage , @Ben , @ChaosRock , et. al. for the great storage suggestions!

Here's the Lower Vault prior to the final assembly.

Congrats! Nothing like massive, secure, durable storage. The assembly is a pain but worth it. You may end up removing the shelf liner... I found I prefer to let the racks slide around since it's quicker to get to them. Enjoy!

Great setup. Going to have to find the thread with the suggestions.

Hey Scott, do the drawers have ball bearing slides? I can't see that indicated on the site.

I'm referring to the bottom chest. The top one says ball bearing.

Same slides in all their chests AFAIK. eBay usually has some sellers with good prices and free shipping. @krafticus got his at Costco or Sam's Club.

THX for the info guys. Dad says I can't ship chips to him any more. He never said anything about 4 of these.

Damn I need these. Awesome!!!!

I suspect you'll find a few of your chips in the bottom drawer until your return.

Also, while the bottom one does give you more storage, if I'm you I might consider ordering only two of each rather than four of the bottom. Regular steel shelving may be more appropriate for the size of your collection; besides, I'm not sure that you'll need more than two rolling storage cases. There's also the price & assembly time to consider. The upper ones are $140 out the door (or less, if you find them on sale). The lower are $250, plus assembly. You can fit 9 more racks in the flat surfaces of three of the upper cases ($520) than you can in two of the lower cases ($500), and not have to assemble a damn thing. Three of the upper also takes up less cubic feet than two of the lower, and (depending on how they are oriented) they fit in the same or less square footage.

To be clear, I don't regret getting a roller at all. I just don't know that four of them gives you the best bang for your buck.

how do you see them beautiful chippies?

A fair and valid question. Ultimately the steel storage will house a significant portion of my Empress set along w/some other sets that either I have in bulk or aren't the most show-worthy of the lot. My father-in-law is also building some shelving similar to this (it will be two 5x2 cube towers; interior of the cubes will be 14")...

...where at least four of my sets will be on display in birdcages and/or presentation cases. The rest will be used for board games & books. But mostly games.

Looking awesome Psy!!! Very, very cool set up!!! I love those things man, I really do...

@slisk250 : The bottom drawer on the large unit can handle a ton of chips man... I have both unit at top capacity and the drawers do a great job... The only issue with the bigger drawer is that you gotta have racks stacked with is not great for access but there's certain racks we don't need instantaneous access...

@Psypher1000 : Where's the pictures of those things FULL?!?!?!?! ;)
;);););)

This is my one and only concern, really. The bottom drawer isn't braced any better than the other drawers and I do have some concerns about weight capacity. You're saying that, from you're experience, there's no issue w/the weight of items being placed in there?

I had the same concerns Scott but... I've had 5,000 chips in racks in that drawer alone for quite a while and NEVER had any issues whatsoever... I bet I could add one more layer there and I'd still be good, I just don't want to risk it... And the more you shove in there the harder the access will be... But yeah, the drawer holds pretty well...

I was thinking about 2 upper, one lower. The top layer of the upper shows 8 racks. Will the pull outs also handle 8?

I hope @Psypher1000 doesn't mind if I respond: (*sorry, I was writing when you responded)

Yep, the pull outs handle 800 chips... Most racks will fit but I remember trying to fit 8 of a certain type of rack and couldn't... I think those were the cheap chinese ones but I can't remember... The top layer fits 800 as well but I decided to remove the arms and I now fit 900, using plastic racks, it works fine for me since the unit is by the wall and I don't need the arms...

In regards to the big unit, I have a couple of drawers with 1,500 chips and a few with 1,400 chips... Here's some pics to illustrate my comments:

Don't mind at all. It is definitely rack-dependent as to whether you can get 8 in a drawer. I initially tried with 67.7 racks and couldn't do it. Then I tried with mixed Paulsons and couldn't do it. I was able to do it, though, with eight of the Paulson racks with stamped like so...

I wish I could remember which one(s) I couldn't fit 8 but I can't... I know for a fact the Chipcos fit quite well... Both PGIs and the original rubbery ones... I wish I had enough Paulson racks to fill those things but unfortunately I don't... :-)

Note to self: buy some 4x25 racks.

Note to self: consider removing the arms from the upper vault.

Yeah, those 4x25 came in handy... Not super great as far as racks go but they do their job just storing the chips...

Just a caveat on both the 1,500 drawers and the 900 top drawer: The only way I believe that's possible is using the white plastic racks from GAMECO... I had a ton of those from past purchases from Jim (TCR)...

Not in mine, they don't. The new Chipco's were far too wide.

Really?!?!?!? Did you get them from Joe's last run? I got a bunch from his first run and already had plenty of the rubbery ones... All racks I have on the smaller unit are Chipcos, both types... That's very weird Scott... On the bigger unit, there's no way to fit 8 acrylic racks across anyways, only GAMECOS...

I am VERY surprised with your experience...

I'll take some pictures later today with Chipco racks only, without the chips so you can see the branding...

Did you get them from Joe's last run?

I did, yes. The fasteners that the manufacturer used to secure the drawers to the slides protrude too far into the drawer to allow for the 8th rack to sit in there.

Oh, I completely believe you! I just want others to be aware that their mileage may vary.

Are your upper chests identical models? I see the tops are different. Maybe there are other size differences as well?

Yep, it could have been a combination of different Chipco runs (unlikely since there's only one mold) and the unit manufacturing variance... On mine they fit perfectly, not too tight but no side movement at all... I don't use the lining...

Very, VERY good point!! I shouldn't have generalized as people might buy a ton of racks that, depending on the case, might not fit...

I wanted to take some pictures to my benefit also 'cause I'm getting old and my brain doesn't work like it used to... ;)

Anyways, I already took the pics so here you go:

And one more, 1,400 chips instead of 1,500... In this case, the 5x20 racks could be whatever I believe...

They are the same Mike... I just painted mine 'stainless steel' to go with my decor, LOL!!!

@ChaosRock does your unit have these two little metal tabs inside the drawers? It doesn't look like it does, but the racks may be obscuring the details.
