Here's my latest completed project: The Ugly Bicycle Cardroom

This set originally started as a small set of Large Greek Key chips that were cool, but just weren't doing it for me. So I traded that set to @RivieraDanny for the bulk of what would eventually become this project, with additional via chips from/trades with @AK Chip @TX_Golf_N_Poker @Racer96 @nlhenerd and @uclaure.

I did all of the milling myself, with huge assists on turnkey milling rigs from @Eloe2000 and @TX_Golf_N_Poker.

"Ugly Bicycles" is how many of the $1s, some of the $5s, and all of the $25s could be described from a wear and cleanliness standpoint, so that was the inspiration for the theme. I did the design work myself, including the faux-shaped inlays, and @timinater was kind enough to give everything a quick look. This thread on hex color matching from @QuailValley was helpful also. The labels were printed by Sticker Mule.

Breakdown
25c x 100 (former roulettes)
$1 x 320 (former Hi-Desert $1)
$5 x 165 (former Hi-Desert $2)
$25 x 60 (former El Dorado 50c)
$100 x 25 (former Hi-Desert $20)
All-in x 10 (former Starburst)
Total 680 chips (plus some spares), bank $5,170

I think this set will be great for 25c/25c through 50c/$1 games. It's heavy on $1s, so lots of chips can get into play at those stakes, with higher denoms handling rebuys and add-ons.

Great job on the chips!

Did you save all the shavings for an art project? ;)

Great job. Great job on the milling. These look fantastic. Wonderful vintage-esque inlay and chip lineup. Love the shaped inlays.

What’s the story behind the theme?

How was all of the milling?

What’s the story behind the theme?
Some of of the chips (fracs and $1s especially) were absolutely filthy when I got them - aka UGLY - and Hi-Desert $1s and El Dorado 50c are notoriously worn - aka BIKE TIRES.

With what I had gotten in trade I was close to having a playable set, so I started swapping/buying additional pieces to get more chips. Initially I wasn’t sure what each denom would be, but once I saw the 312-spotted orange $2, I knew I was on to something. Having a consistent spot on all the chips really adds to the vintage feel I wanted.

“Ugly Bike Tires” was just how I was thinking of the set in my head “what am I going to do with those ugly bike tires?” I found that line art of that odd-looking bike that I used for the underlay and started riffing from there. “Bike tires” was too casual, and “bicycle” flows better. 48516856-D6DE-4A9A-9756-E636566176C9.jpeg
I wanted a old-school saloon sort of feel, so I went with an off-white faux inlay color. The title font, and red text color for the denom were decisions in that direction as well. No real rhyme or reason on what shapes I picked, other than I knew I wanted the gear on the $1 since it matched the theme.

I changed the $25 late in the process since I felt like a previous version was too cramped visually. (Old/new)

All of the inlay shapes are just some photoshop shapes I found for free online. I just picked ones I liked … I call them badge, gear, scallop, flower, spokes, orbit. I wanted to try and do something with a faux shape that probably couldn’t be done with a real inlay - that’s spokes and orbit.

How was all of the milling?
Overall, easier than I expected, but I definitely have some that are deeper than I’d like. I did a quick check of every barrel after applying labels and I think I only have 3-4 “spinner” chips that are milled too shallow. Everything else stacks cleanly with no wobbles outside of what I would expect for casino used chips in varying conditions.

As far as time goes, I think I averaged about 10 minutes per barrel/50 minutes per rack of chips. I’d be interested to know how that compares to others.

These chips are so UGLY!!!

But seriously, these rock! I appreciate that these aren't the mintiest of the lot and look like they have some stories to tell. This is so well done. Congrats!

Nice and smooth THCs are such a treat. Minty is nice, but I’m a big fan of just enough wear to make them comfortable.

Shameless plug - if anyone has a spare barrel of orange Hi Desert $2s, you know they’ll end up in a good home!

I picked up these 15 chips from @JWC, and am thinking of making an uncommon/odd denom.

Maybe a $10? Other suggestions please!

Would these normally have a value? Like I pay $2/per for a showem chip when I buy in, and if I make you show your hand then you get the chip and can turn it in for $2 at cash out?
I've seen it both ways. Either you give each person one at the beginning and they can use it once during the night or there can be a $$ value associated to them that gets cashed out at the end of the night.

Nickels are all done - set complete!
(Except maybe upgrading the All-in to some harvested Silver 7s when I go to Vegas)

100x 5c
100x 25c
320x $1
180x $5
15x $10
60x $25
20x $100
10x All-In
810 chips
Bank $4905

Set is playable from 5c/10c up to 1/1 or short 1/2, but the wheelhouse stakes are for a 25- or 50c big blind where the $1 can be a workhorse.
