Hello all,

I discovered the forum while looking up poker table design ideas (needed something to do in quarantine when I couldn't play) and found the threads on re-felting Barrington tables and custom felts. Ended up re-doing my table with a custom cloth (details here: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/barrington-poker-table-thread.30910/post-1149613).

I play in a regular weekly cash game/league (typically $1-2), with about a half dozen tournaments a year. After spending some time on the forum I've realized that my chips could definitely stand to be upgraded (have some sluggers now, but most of our games still use dice chips) and have been fascinated by all the information here. Would love to have 'casino quality' chips, even if no one else in my game will appreciate it. At some point will be ordering samples, with a goal to have a nice cash set that can accommodate about 20 players at $1/2 (and maybe slightly larger if we ever increase the stakes).

For better or worse probably won't be a cash game in a little while, so plan to take my time and not rush into anything.

So far been having a lot of fun absorbing all the info here - so thanks for that.

Welcome! Excellent intro post, and great start with gathering up info. No shame in wanting better chips either! Definitely try samples before purchasing/committing to a set, get a good feel for them as well as how they sound. Always a good idea not to rush into any purchase, especially with the state of the world, your game may fluctuate a bit when things pick back up. And nice job on the table!

That is a great table refurbish. How long did it take you to complete? I have a full table from college that can use a refurbishing!

Welcome @JZPdub! Solid work on re-felting the Barrington - custom cloth and all!

Like you said, you’ll have plenty of time during this pandemic to figure out what you like and put together a set of chips. Enjoy the journey!

Welcome!

Don't rush into things, buy a ton of samples and have fun with those first :)
Bring the samples to your weekly games as well, that way your players get a feel for what kind of chip they all prefer.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

Casino quality is very narrow. Paulson and CPC for clay and Bud Jones, Matsui and Abiatti for plastic. *Maybe* sprinkle in ceramics. You are not talking hybrids, or China clays or any ot the typical first sets.

There are deals out there, for sure, but you should be prepared to spend $1/chip, and up. You're not getting casino quality for 30¢ a chip, generally (again, there are deals out there).

So for your regular weekly cash game, assuming 8ish players at 25¢/50¢ blinds, your budget should be $400-$600 minimum.

When you pursue 'casino quality,' it's a rabbit hole for sure, and not a cheap one. Lots of people are satisfied with less than casino quality, so figure out what works for you.

He already said 20 players at $1/2:D
That's 1600 chips, or $4K guaranteed, in CPC terms.
Edit: Or $2,720 in Key West terms (also CPC-made, off-the-shelf chips, non-customizable, still very nice ones)

Missed that. Thanks.

At those stakes with that many players, I'd say you're looking at $1000 - $1500 at a minimum for a casino quality set. You can easily spend $4000 on a custom set from CPC.

Took me a little more than a day. Started Saturday morning, was done Sunday morning.

Welcome!

Don't want to make you rush to a decision but there's a group buy for full custom ceramic chips going on right now. Pricing will be around ~30¢/chip. An amazing deal for full customs! A huge upgrade from dice chips!

Check it out:

Thanks! I've seen that, but not quite ready to jump in. Hopefully there will be others in the future.

I think that's the key (and why I put 'casino quality' in quotes). Will have to see if I'm satisfied with something that isn't CPC/Paulsons (or the equivalents you mentioned), or if I want to put int the time to save up for the good stuff. Unless I win the lotto or the WSOP, not sure that $4k is in the chip budget quite yet.

Indeed. That was one of the primary reasons I decided to go from lurker to finally making an account. From tables to the chips, the PCF is community is amazing. Love reading the home game threads and seeing pictures of everyone's game not just in the U.S, but the world. That's when I realized this place was more than just a message board forum. Everyone treats each other like family! Loved seeing how so many here travel to each other's games.

That said, prepare to go down numerous rabbit holes when you discover all the discussion threads on chairs, raised rails, poker room wall decor, side carts and probably one of my favorites, the Hot Dog Roller Pr0n thread, which made me realize I needed an upgrade to take care of the peeps at my game. So much information and ideas on this site. By the way, July 22 is National Hot Dog Day. Just saying if you don't have a roller.

All sounds very sensible - welcome :)

As a newbie myself I agree samples are absolutely the way to go. I'd also keep an eye on the availability of the fractional 'fracs' that go with your intended set. I've managed to buy most of the other denoms I wanted for my first set but now cant seem to get hold of any fracs :( I gather fracs are usually harder to find but other longer term chippers will know more.

Dude! I saw your table build. You've got the logo! You've got the card room name! Jump in! You NEED custom chips! :D

Seriously though, yeah, I'm sure there will be another custom buy down the road once this one is wrapped up. Welcome to the forum.

Thanks! Definitely tempting, but I think patience will win out this time. Appreciate the encouragement though - peer pressure will do wonders in getting me to spend more $ on chips.
