So I had the good fortune of winning some Horseshoe Cleveland chips in a charity raffle here on pcf. I have decided to put together a single table T1000 set with them and I keep going back and forth on how I want to set up the starting stacks. The chip breakdown from the raffle consists of the following;

$5 × 200
$25 × 40
$100 × 60

I have added 80 $25 and 10 $500 chips. So I am currently sitting at;

$5 × 200
$120 × 120
$100 × 60
$500 × 10

This breakdown will be good for starting stacks of;

5 × 20
25 × 12
100 × 6

With that break down I'd like to add 10 more $500 chips so I can have 6 rebuys and also color up the 5's and 25's.

I have since grown concerned that starting with 20 $5 chips may be overkill and have been thinking about dumping some of the 5's and adding a few 25's so my starting stacks would be;

5 × 15
25 × 13
100 × 6

Can anyone comment on a preference and why? Or is there a better starting stack that I haven't considered? I don't mind buying/selling or trading chips to obtain a better breakdown if I need to. I should also mention that I want to stick to starting stacks with only three denominations.

Opinions and or advice would be greatly appreciated as I have also been considering putting a few more T1000 sets together. Using 5's in a tourney set seems to greatly add to the affordability factor.

Thanks in advance!

I rand a T2000 tournament last week with my horseshoes. I had originally planned on going with 20 $5's, but I ended up going with 10 $5's instead, and I'm glad I did. (10x$5, 10x$25, 7x$100, 2x$200) It worked great. I guess if I think back, there was a little bit of change-making, but definitely not enough that it was an issue. I'll stick with the same stacks for next time. I suppose you could go with 15x$5, but 20 would definitely be way too much.

Making some change at the table doesn't really bother me and I have also considered a 10, 10, 7 stack. I wouldnt need that many more chips to run a 16 man 10, 10, 7 which will give me enough chips for the larger stack options for 10 people and under.

I run T1000 and T2000 tournament frequently with a BCC chipset I own. I always use 20 T5 chips and it works great. In fact I'll be running it for our league this Saturday night for 20 players.

I do 20-16-5 and never have a problem with "too many chips" (blasphemy!). Somebody usually builds a wall of 5s, but it just makes it easier to color up a bunch at once when the time comes. I have the bigger cheap racks that fit 21 to a barrel, so I add a show 'em chip to the 5s and can grab two 21 chip barrels for each buy-in. Since you have them, might as well keep 'em.

Hey Bryan! It was good seeing you Saturday brother!

Looking at your current breakdown, you could do 20/12/6 for T1K... You'd only need another 10 T500 (20 total) to color-up the T5/T25 (4,000) and have 6 re-buys (6,000). Sometimes I host a rotating league using T5 and I have 20 of those in my starting stack with great results.

Now, to make it even better, I would recommend more T500 and color-up most of the T100s as well... With 16 entries at T1K, your tourney should end around 500/1000 (400/800, 600/1200 or 800/1600) so the T100s won't be used for anything other than for part of the blinds... In that case, you'd need a total of 30 T500s so you'd need to buy an additional 20 and not 10... So 16 entries (10 + 6) at 1K, you'd need 32 T500s but using 30 T500s, you can have 10 T100s for the blinds and to complete the 16K total in play...

I hope it helps... Sorry if it looks kinda convoluted man... Just let me know if you have any questions...

$120 × 120
$100 × 60
$500 × 30

You actually color up the 100s? It's not like two barrels is hard to manage, even if most of the action is with 500s. Adding capacity for rebuys and deeper stacks isn't a bad idea though.

I personally do when I use T5s but my starting stacks are 2-3-4K with 20/16/10/x with 20ish entries...

But you're right, 3 barrels of T100 (in Bryan's case) are not hard to move around but at some point the T100 will be irrelevant anyways... And we're talking only about an additional 10 T500...

Edit: I had that discussion with other members here... Some prefer stacks and stacks of chips at the end, I do not... Most of those chips are irrelevant and delay the game substantially... I like to play more hands and have less shifting stacks around... Using T25s, my games usually end with only T10K (or T5K) chips in play and it plays beautifully! Using T5, I either have only T500 (or T1K) chips in play only... Matter of preference... Don't see a point in having T100 if the blinds are T1K/T2K...

Our "Ladies Night" game uses 5s in a T4000 starting stack.

T5 x15
T25 x13
T100 x6
T500 x2
T1000 x2

Dropping the 500s and 1000s from the start stack gives you the 3 denom start you want, and a T1000 starting stack.

Never too many chips on the table. The ladies night event has far more limping than a regular event, so big piles of chips are useful as it takes much longer before they cut into their "big" chips. If your group likes to see a lot of flops for cheap, this would be my recommendation.

I know I played a tourney at your place a while back but I can't remember what chips we used or the breakdown. Wish I would have paid more attention.

It was nice seeing you as well! I had a great time with everyone and am looking forward to doing it again.

It does make sense. I think for this set I will stick with just adding 10 more $500's. I am still waiting on the chips that I won from the raffle but I am not sure that I foresee myself hanging on to them for a real long time. Also 10 more chips puts me at an even 400 chips total.

Thanks to all that have made comments and or suggestions. With everyone's input I think I have some good direction for the next T1K tourney set I would like to put together (I am really liking the secondary cincy chips with the uncirculated 5's).

For 16 players I would go with 10x10x7 for 10 players or less fatter stacks would consist of 15x13x6 and the 500 chip breakdown would be;

$5x160
$25x160
$100x115
$500x65

The starting stacks may be a bit thin for the 16 man but it seems like it could be done without too much trouble and I would have enough $500's to color up 5-100 chips plus one rebuy for everyone at the table. I would also have the option to run deeper stacks for the 10 man if I wanted.

Again thanks everyone for your input!

Starting stack at that tourney was T1200 - T5x10, T25x6, T100x5, T500x1. I ran a fairly fast structure to make it a single table 3 hour tournament and it was over in about 2.75 hours. I wanted to get a full table at the cash game before 11pm, mission accomplished!

Oops correction above (I use 10 T5).

I also prefer T25 as lowest Demoniation but I already have a Tournament Set that is only usable for T1000.

To color up faster and to use less Chips for posting Blinds, I use the following Blind Schedule.

There are three Blind Levels with a small Blind that is only 1/3 of the BB.

5/10
5/15
10/20
15/30
20/40
+++ Color Up T5
25/50
25/75
50/100
75/150
+++ Color Up T25
100/200
100/300
200/400
300/600
400/800
