So I'm sitting on the couch surfing eBay when the doorbell rings. It's a few neighborhood kids that tell me some guy just smashed into my Landrover and took off. Great. They went on to say that they know who he was. The company security did an investigation and about 2 hours later there was a knock on the door and the cops were there. It turns out the kids were wrong but they still found the guy who was on a joy ride...one of my more challenging students!!!

It was the most enjoyable parent conference (with security present) I've had in 26 years of teaching. I presume I'm going to have a bit of fun with him for the next 2 trimesters.......cue thunder and lightning.

Did mom and dad make excuses for him?

Very much wondering this...

It would restore some of my faith in humanity to once in a while hear that the parents are making the kid take responsibility, rather than make excuses. Kids mess up, but sometimes parents just add to the mistakes by being lame...

The dad was very apologetic and acted just as he should. But I have him by the balls. I agreed to waive pressing charges against the boy in exchange for a document stating he would pay all costs and a rental when it is in the shop. If I press charges it goes on his company evaluation making him ineligible for a yearly bonus for the most part. He is out of pocket as all insurance is void if the cars are moved. His kid took off.

Grade 6 kid

"So, let's say a 625kg car was traveling at 65kmph when it suddenly crashed into a parked Landrover. What is the total force involved in the crash?"

"Johnny owes Mike $2000 but has to pay it back in 24 monthly increments. How much interest will Johnny pay with an interest rate of 11.9%? Assume daily simple interest, and that the exact minimum payment is made every 30th day."

Did you get a little something for the kids who told you about the accident? They should definitely be rewarded, since the timely notification was the main reason the security guys found the delinquent perpetrator!

I know 2 of the kids who were playing in the park and saw it but the two others went home for dinner. We'll get them today. One of the kid's is my superintendent's son.

Pizza in the park on me tomorrow. Each one gets a pizza.

The cop had a pretty good story. First dad says the car hasn't been driven (as far as he knew). They the cops asked, "Why is the engine warm with the drivers seat moved up so far with rear end damage without rust?" It rained the last two days. :) "We have witnesses if your son can't remember what happened." Brilliant!

Not sure the extent of your damage or if it'll show up later in a CarFax report, but consider looking for "diminished value" on your vehicle as well. Earlier this month I had a kid rear-end me and do over 6 grand worth of damage that will show up in the future when I trade or sell my car. And well, people just don't pay as much for a car that's been in an accident, no matter how well repaired it's been.

We are talking about a 1998 roached out Landrover. It's worth about 3K, probably 2K to fix it. If I were stateside, this would be a totally different situation.

Might consider sending a couple dozen donuts to the cops department, for the excellent policing skills... The cop could have blown it off, but pushed and got the urchin for ya. :). Trust me, cops really do like donuts

Already on it. Letter to supervisor, nice package of dates and tea - Dunkin' Donuts opens in a few weeks in camp.
