I rarely host games because I'm pretty far away from the majority of my friends. My current dice chips should suffice. But I decided I wanted at least china clays from Claysmith gaming. Then I read about Milanos. Then apparently they smell. Plus they're kinda ugly. So Majestics should be what I want. But seeing as I just justified a 250% increase in my initial planned cost, why not just get used Paulsons and be done with it. ORRRRR I could buy the Majestics and relabel them. ORRRRR I could buy the Paulsons and relabel them. So now I'm trying to justify spending 2000% more than I should for the 1-2 games I host a year. I also just got out of grad school so I have no income. Let's do this :D

Haha welcome to the world of just sell your soul to the Paulson chips!!! Even though they never tell you they love you back...... lol
Hope you find what you are looking for!!!!

Welcome!

Get samples of several China Clays from e.g. Apache Poker Chips, and consider getting some Paulson samples as well. Careful with the Paulsons though - might set you back quite a bit, but they will last you a lifetime of hosting.

Well to be honest, you've left alot of stuff out. You could get custom ceramics for cheaper than the used Paulson's ORRRR completely forget about percentages and get on some custom CPC's! :whistling:
If you care for them right and get a nice design they may even hold their value for the years to come if you ever decide to sell.

Welcome!! You are correct, you should just run away now.

ORRRR you lean right in! In the end, was there really ever a choice?

You'll hear this a lot from people - GET SAMPLES of everything.

If you are interested, send me a PM, and I can sell you some stuff for super cheap, to "help" out a new chipper.
I can put together a box of some plastic, china clay, paulson, CPC, BCC, ceramics. You can hate thank me later.

I have never noticed a smell from my Milanos... Now I will have to smell them when I get home.

On a sidenote, my first two shipments of Jacks comes today. I can compare them in the smell test...

Welcome!!!

I started a little over a month ago, and thought I'd try working my way up with ceramics, majestics, etc.
A couple grand later and now I have a Horseshoe cincy 500 chip set, about to have delivered the rest of a 400 chip Jack set (1, 5, 25p, 100p, one rack each) along with a Jack full sample set, and barrel of 100s.
I want to host games, but realize for the rest of the year, I'll be lucky to get 1 or 2 in. I'm taking my chips with me when I visit my dad for father's day and hope to play a game for fun while teaching my daughter how to play hold'em.

Starting slow is not a bad idea (and was my original plan). I actually plan on getting a Laurel Crown ceramic set, and maybe a Majestics set too just because I like the chips and wouldn't mind having ones I can play with my kid and others, without crying if chips go missing lol
For paulsons, I love my Jacks but doubt I'll use them in a game, and have them more as a collector's item, for a few reasons:
They look so good mint
I don't want to lower their value by playing with them in case I do need to sell them later after having gone in hard on getting chips lol
I really like my Horseshoe cincys as chips to play with. They are casino used quality, and I have yet to clean them so I don't feel bad shuffling and playing with them at all. I plan to use them this weekend.

So advice: if you want something to actually use, get what works with your budget. Even if it's just injected molded chips, you'll be happy. I have samples from every tier, and I like them all (except for Deluxe Kings Casino which was broken and falling apart when it arrived and more pieces crumbled shortly after). If your budget allows it, and you want Paulsons, I'd go with casino used quality. They'll be cheaper, and you won't feel guilty handling them.
If you want to collect and not use, then mint paulsons are great. The smell of mint paulsons...even my wife loves it.

I hope to be rich enough one day to play with mint paulsons guilt free hahaha

I don't know if @The Chip Exchange still has the 500 horseshoe cincy set available, but the paypal link is still up in this thread:

Alright...here's what you do. Seek out an AWESOME set, regardless of cost. One that will keep you happy for years to come. Paulsons, TRKs....JUST GO FOR IT!!!

You are progressing similar to me, and wasting money along the way. Sure it will break your budget, but you and I (and most everybody on here) know you're going to get there eventually anyway. You'll just spend a ton more trying to pretend that you can control the urge.

I can hear the gears in your head turning. You're thinking, "damn...how does he know exactly what I'm thinking?" Because my friend...we all pretended like we had an ounce of will power at one point in time. Gotta have a good cash set. And a sweet tournament set....even if you hate tourneys. Just ask @detroitdad :)

Enjoy the journey, because it ends like this if you're not careful. :)

I still have 3 or 4 left I believe. Happy buying :)

Hello and welcome!

As others have probably said (TL;DR), don't exclude custom ceramics for a fully customizable option for reasonable prices. Have a look at all the vendor links here (wonderful site sponsors, all of them) to see what there is on the commercial market that have snagged many an unsuspecting chipper.

The thing is, buy chips so you have to play more poker to justify the purchase. The more you play, the better you become, and that means more money for even more chips. It's a great swim once you dip the toes in

Get samples. I also recently sold my cheap plastic chips. Was set on Dunes China Clays. Then I got to sample them. Hated em!

I sampled alot of styles. I was privileged to do so without ordering or spending money, but looking back at how it helped shape my perspective and make clear to myself what I like. Everyone else be damned. These chips pique curiosities of humans in very different ways depending on the individual.

Spend the money on real clay or hybrid ceramics. Try a few Paulsons and/or CPCs. Then handle a China Clay. If you are even slightly OCD about mediocrity or a lack in quality, you will NOT like China clay dunes...

Just my .02cents (I'm a noob but I've been busy obsessing over these darn clay circles)

I bow down to your awesomeness. That is INSANELY amazing. Wow.

Today I told my wife what's in the mail...

She didn't respond. Didn't look at me. We were enjoying lunch out...

Don't know if I will get to sleep on couch even
..

But...it'll be worth it when I get my chips :nailbite:
