Was discussing this a little bit on another thread but I was wondering if anyone had questions or wanted to talk about high stakes. I play regularly in a 10-20/20-40 NLH game probably 2-3 times a week. I am not a pro but I am a winning regular player in that game. Proof is in my profile media photos. Ask Away!

How do you study poker to get to the point you are at, and to keep improving?
Honestly just playing and getting experience is so key. Its crazy how important basic fundamentals are at higher stakes and making sure you're mixing up your strategy and ranges with different players so you don't become predictable. The higher stakes you play the less players there are in the field so you're playing more regularly with the same guys so its important to mix it up and play exploitatively.

so with 50bb whats your utg open range and 3bet calling range vs just shipping it? this is referring to a previous post from another thread
Well as per usual it depends on the player. The game is all pros and regs so I know whos a wild man and whos not. As a general rule when buying in short I don't want to open a lot of pots in early position. Save for AJ or better I really don't want to open because there is so much 3 and 4 betting going on pre flop ( typical in higher stakes games).

3 Betting range is actually wider than you think. I include some suited connecters in there like 76 or 89 just because of the stack size people had to respect my 3 bets because Im playing short.

I assume these games are uncapped, do most people buy in for more than 200BB regularly? What is the normal amount of BB buy in?

yeah i figure it was TT+ but then youre opening range is also tight as well. so are you opening TT utg facing a 3bet, cold 4, then you ship? Im still fixated on how often youd find yourself shipping it vs playing later streets.

Do you feel the level/quality of play is much better at the higher levels or people that just have more money to play with?
Absolutely. There is way more exploitative play and players at this level know how to get value so much more than at lower levels. Ranges are wider and there a lot more respect given to each player. There are definitely regs who blow their stack or guys with lots of money that just like to play and lose but by the by the players in this game are very dangerous and know how to play. Theres also a lot more 3 betting and bluffing so it can be difficult to know where you're at in any given hand. The more you play the more history and experience you get with each player so thats really the key to being profitable.

Is there tax withholding on your cash outs?
There is but how I subvert this is if I'm up big in a session I take 10k out in cash and the rest in pumpkins (1k chips) I keep in my bag and take home with me. Then I take the cash to the bank and keep the chips I have in my running bankroll.

I cannot stress this enough .... ALWAYS TAKE CHIPS lol

Yes everything above 5-10 is uncapped. I usually sit with 10k but I've sat with more if I know theres a particular whale or player whos going to punt his stack and keep coming back. Get full value that way. The avg buy in is all over the map. Some guys with with 10-20k and theres a few pros who always want to cover the table so they may be in their bag for 40k... Just depends on the player. There are even some regs who (although not profitable) come in and buy in for the minimum to try and run up a stack and go 1k at a time. Rarely works though.

Generally if you're getting 4bet with TT then youre behind or up against AK so its really up in the air. Its always a tough spot since youre flipping or dominated in most spots. It sounds knittish for me but if I'm getting 4bet with TT UTG then I've played the hand wrong in some way and I'm actually laying it down... Theres so many better spots to get it in and when youre playing short you always want to get it in when you are confident you have control of the hand.

Surprisingly with 5k in a 50-100 game there is plenty of wiggle room when youre short and players have to respect your stack because they know your ranges are tight. So a jam in late position even with a marginal hand like AJ or AT can be enough to fold out everyone and in a game like that a couple bets could be up to 1000 easy.

Do you get massages often? being a low stakes player an hour massage can sometimes be 1/3 of my stack.

I do here and there. Not regularly. Actually now that I think about it I havent in awhile. Its nice and relaxing but a waste of money if you ask me. I'd just as soon get a real massage somewhere than at the table.

Where did you start limit-wise and how long until you moved to your current level.

Where did you start limit-wise and how long until you moved to your current level.
I started playing in casinos at $4-8 limit if you can believe it. But when I started playing no-limit I was at 1-2. I beat that game rather quickly and started playing 2-5. I played 2-5 for a long time like close to 5-6 years and I would take a shot here and there at 5-10 which at that time was the big game at the casino in which I played. I'd get smashed at 5-10 generally but then I started winning more and more and eventually it was the only stake I wanted to play. 2-5 is almost boring to me at the casino I play at regularly but its fun when I'm on the road playing 2-5 at different rooms where people don't know anything about my game. Then the guys I was playing 5-10 with wanted to play bigger and so we started playing 10-20 and 20-40 and thats where we've been ever since. Just the other night for some crazy reason two guys wanted to play heads up 50-100 and that game filled out so we were playing insanely high but it was really fun. Won a small bit (6k profit) from buying in short for 5k.

What awesome chips have you bought with your winnings?

That Wynn 5k plaque is sexy as hell.

Biggest winning session in dollars?

Biggest losing session in dollars?

Do you have any stop losses in place? Like if you lose 3 buy ins for the night you stop?

Do you have a tendency to tilt and how have you learned to deal with/manage tilt?

PS cool thread btw thanks for doing this.

How many hours a week do you play? What's your non poker life like?
I think I average about 20 hours a week sometimes less, sometimes not at all. I work for a living I own my own business. Past that life's pretty normal. I travel I go out with friends, dates, vacations, time with my family. Just a regular joe lol
