I am not a chipper. Been happy with the same set of NexGen chips for 15 years. Recently got in on the Cards mold group buy, so I'm good. On the other hand, I love a good bargain. So, I'm thinking about putting together a small cash set of the HSIs to jump into the Paulson world. So, my choice is between the used brown $1 chips for $.49, and the black Friday sale new chips with the maroon edgespots for $.60. I ordered small amounts of the different $1 chips to get an idea of the differences. Before I got them, I was thinking, what is better looking than a stack of mint paulsons with those sharp edges? And now that I have some to play with, I still think that, but the used chips are so much nicer to handle, and I don't really mind the brown at all!

Yes, I KNOW other people can't answer this for me, it's strictly a choice of personal preference. I also know that many of you are thinking, these chips are less than a dollar each, is it even really worth posting about? For me, $.60 is a lot per chip! Sooo… is there anything else I should consider? Any guesses as to whether there will be plenty of the new HSIs left after the black Friday sale? I'm guessing that resale wise, the new chips will hold their value better going forward? Thanks for your time.

If you are not a chipper, as u stated then go with the most economical route that is acceptable for you. I also own well used RHC chips and they make for great travel sets for non-chipper games where the only other options are slugged plastics/dice chips.

I bought the used browns when the original sale happened, and they’re the dirtiest of any of the chips I bought in that sale. They’re absolutely playable, and I didn’t have any complaints when but my next chip purchase will probably be an ultrasonic cleaner to clean them up. The 5s and 25s look fine (though a bit grimey), but the whites show a lot of their gunk.

another thing to think about is whether you’ll be mixing with other chips. New 1s in a stack of 20 might be a bit taller than a used barrel of 20s.

rambling here, but would you play them or just shuffle them and keep them on a shelf? If they’re a shuffle set, get the new ones and enjoy the sharp edges. If they’re going to be played, then I really like the idea of not having to worry about putting them in play. Greasy pizza? Hotdog juice? Don’t care.

the black friday sale also has NEW brown spot primaries for .60.

so you can get new on either, just have decide which spot and pattern you would rather have, I got the brown spot primaries

0.60 a chip is probably too high a price to pay for: any CC, any stock ceramic, any low end plastic, many used vintage ASM, any paranoid

0.60 a chip is likely a fantastic deal for any custom ceramic, any high end plastic, any compression clay, and especially if ex-casino and in good condition.

I bought 2 racks of the used $1s at $.49 a month ago. I cleaned them with a soak in OxyClean and they are now a beautiful bright white.
That said, had I known they’d be available new for only 11 cents more...I would’ve waited and got the new ones.
I’m not as crazy about the thin maroon edgespots, the color is great but I like the larger spots better.
But that’s me...you do you.

Actually, I can answer it for you... Secondary 1a. I think it works with more mixed set possibilities better than the brown $1
Agree that the purples are a bit more versatile, but I like that with the primaries, you get a simple 2 spot progression to a slightly more complex 3 spot on the primary 5s.

Yes, the progression works better with the brown ones just because of the dual edge spots. However I also like the progression of the 1A since it has the 1/8 size edge spots... Even though there's four of them. it's like you're going from four little ticks to all of a sudden getting 2 or 3 fat spots.

I wonder if one of the reasons they were so dirty was color transfer from those big brown spots?
When those lady licks came out at the beginning of the year (White $1s with 312 brown spots) I did a shuffle test on them, and they got filthy quick.
I remember the same thing happened with my Terribles, which had a big brown spot. One day I had mint chips, next day it looked like somebody spilled coffee on a bunch of them.
I’m not sure if all Paulson browns are the same, bust based on two previous experiences with RHCs with 1 inch brown spots, I wouldnt buy white RHCs with big brown spots.

I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I used to shuffle a sample set of Classics when they first came out...and the white $1 was always filthy in no time. I’m sure the bigger the edgespot on a white chip, the worse it gets. However, I still like the look of the larger spots, especially the edge when viewed in stacks.
For me, having to clean them more often is just the cost of doing business, I guess.

Thanks everyone for your replies. They are very helpful. I still haven't made up my mind! I think I'm leaning towards used mainly because the others I would buy for the set would also be used, so they would match better.
