Has anyone tried cleaning hot stamped chips with dawn, hot water, and an electric toothbrush? I was able to effectively clean 600 chips with inlays this way, but I am about to get 300 hot stamped used casino chips and would like to minimize risk to these chips.

I know several people have had success with the ultrasonic cleaners but I am okay with some elbow grease and prefer to use funds for more chips.

Thanks,
-NS-

I've always used a slight bit of oxi clean and a magic eraser. Oxi does take too much color off if overused. If they aren't too dirty, the magic eraser alone should be just fine.

Prior to the ultrasonic, I used oxi and a magic eraser. It worked well. I have had some chips where the hotstamp degraded, but mostly no affect. I think the chips that lost suffered the degradation were just not hotstamped as well as the others. Expect to have slight degradation on a couple chips, and you won't be disappointed.

OxiClean can kill hot-stamps -- effects range from no damage to hot-stamp discoloration (usually gold-to-silver) to total dissolving of the hot-stamp itself, and it is very inconsistent on what results you might expect. For that reason, I only use non-Oxi Dawn and warm water when cleaning hot-stamped chips.

OxiClean can also dissolve ASM/CPC chips, and rather quickly. Best to restrict OxiClean/MagicEraser usage to non-hotstamped Paulson and BCC chips (plus safe for ceramics and plastics).

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'll follow iblonger and BGinGA's proven methods to be safe on the hotstamps.

I am new to this hobby, but everytime I see a hotstamp, I like them more and more. Especially after buying courage's rack of 50 cent pink silver city's and Racer96's diamond jo quarters.

This, plus I protected the hot stamped area with my thumb as an extra precaution. It worked just fine. No damage, no dirt.

Another vote. I've cleaned hundreds of hotstamped chips this way (Dawn, toothbrush, some thin nitrile gloves, and thumb protector). Never a problem!

Okay, so no brushing over hot stamped area. Thanks! I was about to go to town over the whole chip. Looks like I should be a little more careful then.

My method was two large plastic bowls. Bowl 1 with a healthy shot of Dawn and warm water, then soak a barrel or two of hotstamped chips for a minute or two, but leave chips in while I clean the batch. A towel or dishcloth beside Bowl 1. The glove is just to protect my thumb if cleaning a bunch of chips. Grab a chip, cover the stamp with thumb and brush the face, then flip and repeat. Rinse in Bowl 1 then roll the chip edge on the towel that's beside Bowl 1 (it will get damp and be good for cleaning rolling edge). Dunk the chip in Bowl 2 which is full of clean cold water and toss on a second towel to dry.

These hot stamps were by far the hardest for me to clean so far with a sticky grime...

I cleaned these the same way as all my other chips with inlay except I used the thumb method which was key from the other replies on here. Thank you for this tip!!!

The method I use is very close to this. I like the addition of the roll chip edge to help clean it further which I don't do currently.

The glove is key on the chip holding hand!!! I did a rack without a glove before... and my hand turned into a prune... and who wants a hand that turns into a dried fruit with laxative properties?

They turned out great, and it looks like the hot stamps made it through with no damage. It's a good thing that most of the dirt and grime is on the rims. Congrats!
