Hi all! I'm pretty new here. Looking to get my first set of nice chips, and I'd really like to get a set of custom chips that are unique to me. My initials are MGM, so I thought it would be fun to get chips that have some reference to the MGM brand. However, I don't want to do anything illegal and make "counterfeit" casino chips, I just want a fun custom chip. Is this a murky area of chip designing? Is it totally not allowed?

It depends who your vendor is. Reputable chip makers like Classic, ABC or Sunfly are fairly careful about what they print and press. If it's close but doesn't go too far, it's typically acceptable. If it's protected art used for a purpose that is outside of its intended use, it's usually allowed. Ie: I had Iron Maiden Chips made for a fictional custom set. Is the art protected, yes. Am I using it for an Album I'm about to release? No. More importantly, it's for private use. I'm not looking to profit from it.
Keep it close, but don't go too far. I'd say if you had MGM lettering and used a goat or some other animal for instance atop the logo, it would be good to go.

If you settle for ceramics from China they’ll make you any design you want, without a care in the world (search for ”cards mold” on this site) Any other place, brpro, CPC or custom labels from @Gear, you’re gonna have to make some changes to the design and/or name so that it’s not an exact copy.

I have this Paris set for instance with actual $1s and $5s but with custom labels on the rest that (haven’t gotten to the big denoms yet). The custom labels don’t match the originals (although pretty darn close).

The point of doing something custom is to somehow make it unique to you. Take some time to figure out what you want and why you want it.

You technically don't have to "copy" anything at all. MGM Grand chips are harvestable.
