I've been thinking of getting my first set of non cheap plastic poker chips and have been leaning towards getting a set of Milano chips to start myself off. I got some samples and noticed they were a bit chalky/dusty which got me wondering what level of care is required for china clays. If I'm going to be buying them I would like to have a pretty solid understanding of how to take care of them.

I did some research but nothing I could find explained the frequency of how often you should be cleaning the chips. I also found expensive chip cleaning machines but I figure there are probably cheaper options out there. As a newcomer to nicer poker chip owning, what advice can y'all give to me on proper care habits?

If they’re chalky maybe rinse in water. The only time you’ll need the expensive cleaning machine (ultrasonic) is if they’re full of casino gunk.

Most likely with Milanos you’ll just buy them, play them, and never have to clean them. The dust will go away with regular use.

yeah, for a typical home game the practical answer is never. maybe if youre hosting a lot of games and theres a lot of food at the table, maybe every year or two?

My first ASM set.... Played 60 games a year for 6 years, and maybe 10 games a year for 5 years... And it's the first set I've ever seen get hooker juice starting on the hundos....

So, more then likely, it'll never happen. It's possible, but... Nah.

We play every week and when I only had a set of cheap-o chips I still found the desire to wash them about once a year with just basic water and soap in bowl. But I wouldn’t have called it a necessity. I now own an ultrasonic cleaner but still wouldnt use that for basic cleaning of home game use dirty chips.

But yeah, China clay chips like the Milanos or real clay compression chips like CPCs could use a little initial cleaning just to wipe of the initial production dust and make them shiny.

For that "new chip" chalkiness, a damp towel usually gets that off and makes 'em look real nice.
When to wash them? When you push down on a stack and some of them stick together when you lift them up.
