OK, we all love chips. Paulsons, TRKs, BCCs, CPCs and just about any other round, clay disc. (yeah, I know. There is plastic and ceramic too) But has anyone else out there thought about putting together an all clay mixed manufacturer set? I've been trying to put together my first Paulson set, but then I keep seeing all these other cool non-Paulson chips. And unfortunately, I am on a shoestring budget, so when I see cool chips that are not too expensive, I start thinking if I could incorporate them into my set. I'm just trying to brainstorm through the pros and cons, and since I don't have very many clay chips in hand, I thought I would throw this out to you much more experienced chippers to set me straight.

I'm kind of luke warm on chips...

I agree, I would not mix manufacturers. I have chips from many different brands and I just don't think they play well together. I think that you can find a set from a particular brand within your budget. It might not be a TRK set, but it'll be a nice set regardless.

Not a big deal for normal people (non-chippers). I don't think many of your casual players would even notice.

People around here don't even want to mix molds (ie. THC & RHC) so the majority of the feedback you'll get is that it's a bad idea.

I've been to casinos that mixed Chipcos with Paulsons so they don't care.

Casinos mix ceramics and clay on occasion. I wouldn’t want to do it, but whatever bloats your boat.

I personally would never do it. Tastes differ, though.

I might be able to put together a set that I liked that combined a few different vintage ASM molds, if I thought about it very hard, maybe.

Ok, I take it back. I actually have a vintage set that I'm working on comprised of Paulson diamond mold along with BC Wills. It's not perfect, but that imperfection actually plays a bit toward the vintage aspect.

Still, the only reason I did it was for this vintage set. And I wouldn't do it for any others.

I guess when I joined I didn’t get the rule sheet. Do what you want. There’re no stinking rules.

It’s buried in the site terms and condition. Section 3, paragraph 3, article iii “thou shall not mixith clay chips from different manufacturers in thine sets, or mixith different molds from the same manufacturer in thine sets, even thoughith some thoughtless houses of wagering have repeatedly violated this rule to their detriment and downfall”

I have been using som BCC quarters with the rest of my Paulsons just because it has taken so long to find an affordable option. NOBODY cares! Except me... the BCC feel great but, however I did finally find som Paulsons for my fracs which I can’t wait to get into play.

Oh no worries, I'm going to do what I want to do. But I still like to get input from others. Still not really hearing any actual reasons not to do it. I may go ahead and acquire some different chips and then if I don't like it when I get it all put together I'll sell off the ones I don't want to use.

I'd say the reason not to do it would be a difference in feel, sound, edge bevel, circumference, and barrel height. But if those differences don't bother you, then the sky's the limit.

Edit: for me, the circumference and edges not being the same really feels weird and I typically don't like it. Like grabbing a bunch of different chips to make a bet feels odd.

Yes, I did that last night. I have a few Paulsons, BCCs and CPCs and was handling them together. Was surprised that the circumferences were each a little different. As far as edges, you could easily have differences even with an all Paulson set if some are mint, some lightly used, and others more used. Because my budget is tight, I'm likely to end up with mostly used chips, so very doubtful that they will all be the same degree of used. Even within a single denomination. I'm not going to let that get me tilted.

I agree about the edges. Obviously if you're mixing casino used with VG+, they're going to feel different. I guess I was mostly talking about how the edges were beveled. Even within the same level of use, they feel different. But perhaps more jarring to me was such a circumference difference. I found this out when got my first C&J chips. They're just ever so slightly larger than Paulson's.

The feeling does get to me when they get mixed, but if it doesn't bug you then like I said, the sky's the limit.
