How much do China Clay samples vary?

Hi all,

I've been hosting home games happily for 15 years with my custom labeled Nexgen chips. I recently aquired some China Clay samples just to see what the fuss was about. I received Majestics, Dunes, and Milanos. I was really surprised to find that the Majestics, which I liked the best visually beforehand, are much more slick than the other two.

I did some "tilt the stack testing", and the Majestics are about as slick as my Nexgens. The Dunes and Milano significantly less.

From all that I have read so far, it seems that there are a lot of varying reports on this. My assumption is that the Majestics that I got are just an anomoly. Is there a lot of variation between different samples of the same chips? Do the CCs become more or less slick with some play? I noticed with my Nexgens, that some white ones that I had stored away are a little less slick than the ones I've been playing with. Thanks!

I personally don’t notice much of a difference between any china clay samples. It comes down to which design you prefer for the most part. I have milanos and they are fine, obviously nothing mind blowing. Royals stack the best but that’s probably because there is more overall chip material which makes them more sturdy.

China clays have gotten progressively slicker over time as formulas have inched closer and closer to those used for plastic chips.... which also makes newer versions brighter and more durable. It's a trade-off.

If you have the Las Vegas mold nexgens, I feel China clay are slicker. I use my majestics set as a travel set, when coloring up I usually have a barrel explode on me once per night. The Las Vegas mold nexgens stack really well. I think they suffer in feel (more rubbery) and sound compared to CC, but stack-ability and slickness they are superior imo. They are also non denominated, but labels fix that.

Yes, earlier China Clays, such as the "Wallsons" , crumble quality aside, were actually very "Paulson like" , and had a clay feel & 10g weight, vs many of today's "China clays" which seem more solid plastic-y .. Years ago, I actually had a mixed tourn set, of some denoms Paulson, & some denoms were CC, and they played and felt very well together, casual players knew nothing of the difference, something that would never mix if it were Paulsons & Ceramic, metal inset or plastics ...
Not sure if any of Today's CC's are still using the older formulas ...

But this is my main point, in my samples, the Milanos and Dunes seem very similar to each other in look feel, and slickness. The Majestics however, look, feel, and are in fact slicker, MUCH slicker. I have not read reports of this being the case. I'm thinking that the Majestics set I got maybe had oil or something applied to them to make them more slick. I would never spend .40 per chip for something so slick. I expected, as you said, for all of them to feel and act similar, and it just came down to a design preference for people.

It would be good to hear from more people regarding the slickness of currently available CCs. I would have expected similar feel as well. My set of Dunes CCs v.2 are not in the slick category. I'm the third owner and would assume that they've gotten some play, but they still appear new. I would compare their appearance, feel and slickness (or lack thereof) to casino used chips - no real difference (new Paulson's feel better indeed). The sound is very similar to casino used as well, but here the nod does go to casino used.

CC-Paulson comparison pictures below.

fwiw I don’t believe those sample chips were oiled. I oiled my set that I use but don’t think I did the samples. they were purchasd at least three years ago so I cannot guarantee that though

Thanks, did you notice any difference between the samples and your chips? I know you were selling a lot of different chips, so you may not remember.

I had a set of Milanos. They smelled of burnt rubber so I got rid. That’s my contribution to this thread  :ROFLMAO:

People do say that the majestics are more slick than other CC’s but I don’t really see it. I have pretty low expectations when it comes to CC’s and basically just see them as blue-collar chips that serve the purpose of letting me run an efficient home game. In other words, I wouldn’t collect multiple CC sets for novelty purposes the same way I would Paulson sets. To me they are all one in the same and one CC set does me just fine.

not really sorry. CC "feel" better than nexgens but they don't stack better.

That is an all-inclusive statement that simply isn't true.....because different china clay compositions have different handling characteristics. Some stack incredibly well, while others are much slicker.

Yes, you are correct. I was still really talking about the majestic vs nexgens.

That's the other thing, all this talk I heard about how much they stink... I put them up to my nose, I don't smell anything!! I don't know what to believe about these things. Anyway, the good thing for me is that while the Milanos and Dunes are nicer than the Nexgens in just about every way, it's not a big enough difference for me to want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars to replace what I have. My mind is at ease now! :)

The Milanos I had smelled but other guys on here didn’t have that problem. I’ve never had Nexgens but I wouldn’t recommend the Milanos.

I have a travel set of Majestics and I find them to be quite slick. Slicker than I remember the Milanos being.
