I am trying to make some smaller sets from my excess chips stock, and I am not sure how many quantity of each denomination would make a good set? What is typically the highest denomination in a cash game?

Most of what I have a white / pink.

Definitely depends on the blinds, as well as how it plays.... aggressive/mandatory straddles/deep stack buyins can all lead to more chips needed.

My group plays 25c/50c nl or 50c/$1 nl. My chipset consists of 1 rack of fracs (whichever is the small blind), 2 racks of $1s, 4+ racks of $5s, and either a rack of $20 or $25. But the guys I usually play with are nits. We usually don't even need the high denoms.

More generally (per table), I think a good place to start for any stakes is 1 rack of blinds chips, 3 racks of workhorse chips, and 2+ racks of value chips to get to the bank size you want.

Should the chips all be of the same manufacturer / casino or as long as they are all $1 or $5 does it matter? I am not sure I can make a set that will be all from the same place?

That's kind of up to you. Many people mix different casinos in their sets...Not often do you see different manufacturers, though.

It would definitely be frustrating if you had several different chips of the same denomination. Chips are worth using primarily because they are a quick way to identify how much is in the pot, in a stack, etc....If they are hard to distinguish, or just random, that defeats the purpose.

For bare minimum, this is what I used to do for my games:

$40 to $100 Buy-in, 10 players with re-buys:

100 - .25
100 - 1.00
100 - 5.00
40 - 25.00
10 - 100.00
THis worked well for a while. Then the game grew so I went to:

100 - .25
140 - 1.00
120 - 5.00
40 - 25.00
20 - 100.00

Then I bought a custom set: The Music Shack:

200 - .10
200 - .25
200 - 1.00
200 - 5.00
100 - 20.00 (only because I had to buy Min 100, over size A-mold).
20 - 100.00 (these are Plaque's)

One thing I have learned, is that more larger denoms on the table help when cashing out. But some people like having lots of chips on the table.

I started to give (on one table of 10 players $100 buy-in cash game) 16 - .25, 16 - 1.00, 16 - 5.00, then for re-buys, I use the 20's I only use the hundos if its a crazy action night.

Ok. That makes sense. I will have to take a very close look at what I have and see what can be cobbled together.

The problem I have is all of my chips are the lower denominations. I only have .50 / 1.00 / 2.00 / 2.50 and a few 5.00. I have nothing large to mix in. I am not sure i can put together a set that would even be desirable for anyone to want?

Ok, I probably need to do some rethinking of what I had initially thought would work, as I am clearly seeing that it will not. Thank you.

If you are trying to sell a set, I would sell by the rack not set.

If you are trying to make your set work right now, you do not need the $2 chips or the $2.50, make on of those your 20 or 25, and the other 100.

What is your break down? color? quantity?

Yes, if you are trying to sell a set rather than use it...it is easier to sell by the rack then require that all be purchased.

All of the chips were originally acquired to play with, and it never happened. I have given a few here and there to co-workers who play occasionally. Most all of my friends have full sets, and I do not see the need for me to keep the quantity that I have. I will post them individually on the Classified. I just no idea on how to organize them, or what makes the most sense.

I will send my a PM with what I have.

By the way, welcome to the forum! Where in Saint Louis are you from? I'm out in Saint Charles myself.

My backyard! Well, welcome. Good luck with your impending sales!
