Disclaimer: I've not seen anyone do this with custom chips, so I kinda surmise this is a terrible idea.

Synopsis: I run a FL private game - stakes are $3/$6 with a full kill on flop games.

My cash game set consists of $1s and $5s/$25s From Eldorado Club & Empress Joliet respectively (mainly a PL/NL set). Although my bank is over $4k, I often sell out of $1s and $5s and getting more to match is a difficult and ongoing saga.

This is not all of them but here's a little bit of pron:

264405

So I'm considering getting some $3 chips made. The Dia de Los Muertos from ABC are a leading candidate.

My concern is that I'll have no use for them if we ever raise the stakes to $4-$8 or higher - which is a distinct possibility. And from looking around, there isn't a huge market for $3 denomination chips in quantity.

So my question is this: how lame is the idea of printing the denoms as '$2/$3'? The idea is that if we ever raise the stakes, the custom chips will still be useful.

And if that's awful as I suspect it is, what about printing '$3' one one side and '$2' on the other?

Not sold on the idea of needing or using $3 chips in your game in the first place, nor mixing ceramics with Paulsons (both from ocd and damage risk perspectives), but if I did go that route, I'd just make them no-denoms chips that would play as $3 chips. If you later change the stakes, they could still be used as whatever value would be best for the new game.

But marking chips with two different denominations is pretty lame, no matter how you do it.

In all seriousness, I’d lean towards a chip I could relabel ($3s to $4s) rather than a ceramic...assuming that you can live with the same color that you had for $3s when you change the to $4s

$3 chips in a FL game would greatly speed up pot division in hi/lo split games... which is the majority of games called.

As a quick example, we had a $400ish pot at Gun Lake Casino in a $4-$8 O8 game that was about 90% $1 chips. Literally slowed the game down for 5 minutes while the dealer stacked then divided the pot (3 players got sixthed in the hand in question). $2 chips would have cut the time to divide the pot in half.

I would create a full dedicated limit set... not just print $3 chips. I may be new around here, but I'm aware of the ramifications of mixing ceramics and Paulsons :)

A non-denom chip does solve the problem and is something I'd thought of... I just am not a fan of non-denominated chips in cash games. I don't have a good reason.. just a matter of preference I guess.

This idea has merit, although a $4 chip might be even weirder than one worth 66 cents :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I looked into it... it looks like all he has left are the BCCs. I had some racks of $1s a while back. They weren't bad but I remember them being kind of slippery.

.20 apiece from The Chip Exchange is a nice deal though... maybe I'll order a barrel and see how they compare to the rest of the chips I'm using.

A question about a double denom chip leads to support for no denoms. Not that @Taghkanic needed more support for no denoms but here you go.

Try @Potsie1 BCC Mardi Gras set $2 and $3 sets available

If you can afford 2 limit sets, then I’d do that. Use a $1 chip set to support $2/$4 and $3/$6 games. Use a $2 chip set to support $4/$8 and $6/$12 games. Stay away from the $3 chip.

If you can only afford 1 set, definitely go non-denom and gives you all the above flexibility in 1 set.

I absolutely love the Mardi Gras chips. Every denom is just amazing. The challenge is the fact that getting more of them should the need arise would be difficult if not impossible.

Ace's $3 are out there in minty condition for reasonable prices, I think.

Nice idea, but I need about 1000 of them though.

For security purposes, you really should consider customs or at the very least, relabels.

Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that security is always a consideration... that said, I am of the attitude that if I have to be mindful of cheats, it's not worth the trouble to run a game. For that reason we're pretty selective on who gets invited.

I don't want to come off as negative - I appreciate everyone taking the time to chime in with suggestions.

It's not a question of affordability. It's more of a situation where I don't want to have things on hand that I don't use anymore. I'd much rather release them into the community for the enjoyment of others. But moving $3 chips in high volume is probably going to be difficult, so I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money on them since I'll almost certainly take a loss when I sell them.

I'll think about it some more. A non-denominated chip probably makes the most sense... and to be honest I really can't tell you why I don't like the idea, I just don't. Maybe it's for the same reason I don't like dice chips :cool I guess it's that I prefer the most authentic experience I can replicate.

If you get 1000 chips singles cover 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 just fine. 900 chips is a rack per player, plus a rack of 20s or 25s for bank bulk and value store. You probably will use more of the value store chips than at a casino, limit games don't need to be 1 and 2 chip structure.

Just keep the Paulson's for no limit cash.

not sure which one is more awful... but they both qualify.
No reason to print 2 different denoms on the same chip, go non denom as others have suggested or try to find more $1s and $5s...
If you can't, then it may be time to move to a new $1 and/or $5.
