Feels like once a week I'm cleaning up someone spilling a drink.

I have side tables (with no cupholders) and slide under cup holders, but week in and week out at least one spilled drink.

I'm thinking my only option is to completely eliminate side tables as they are the majority of the issue. Thus requiring use of the cup holders only

Do you punish players? How do you handle

This is how I handle drink spillers...

Oh no!.. tell us what happened Andrew.:sneaky:

Cup holders in the rail. No open glasses, just beer bottles and cans, we do penalty shots of hard liquor as part of gameplay. NEVER had a spill in over a year (and my crew gets totally out of hand).

The two spills I had were family members with whiskey glasses that refused to follow the rules...... only allowed it twice and on each occasion, I had a smashed glass..... 2/2, never again.

And.... i agree, side tables with cup holders would be VERY smart

  1. We keep "spill towels" at each end of the room for rapid clean-up, which may not even involve me having to move.
  2. Scotchguard the table and the rails.
  3. Unless you have lots of room, I think side tables are terrible ideas. If you have to twist your torso to get a drink (or to replace it) you are asking for trouble.
  4. The first player we banned was banned because he spilled his wine on the floor, looked and shrugged, then walked away. I didn't make a scene, but everyone was made aware that accidents happen. Walking off like it didn't will end your attendance with no warnings.
  5. Slide-under cupholders. You can position them to your convenience. Some players like their drink right in front of them, others like it left or right. Don't try to dictate where they should be comfortable - everyone is different. I think I've had 1 drink spilled on the table in ~12 years. The biggest risk is when people are moving about the room with freshly topped off glasses.

When someone spills a drink at my game, I make them clean it up and ridicule them the entire time.

(NOTE: 85% of the time, it's me and I'm muttering things like "STUPID BERG. REMEMBER TO BLOT NOT WIPE BERG YOU DUMB APE"
Having the spiller clean it up is never fruitful, always creates a sticky mess. Not that they don't give a decent effort, but never will be as efficient as the host/homeowner that doesn't want a sticky floor after the night is over

I'll never forget Drunkard Jerry. :whistling:

(I think I remember the name correctly. )

I have deep cup holders in the rail which I know is a topic of its own. But anyway I never have spills due to them.

It was Drunktard Jerry. Drunkard Jerry wouldn't have repeatedly shipped any 2 cards preflop. :-)

God, that was a meetup...54 people in a 1200 square foot condo on 3 floors, capped with 2 of my friends playing HU 1/2 NL on a chair in my bedroom.

LOL, Stupid autocorrect didn't like Drunktard. Yep, that meetup was one for the books.

Drink carts + cupholders. Period.

At a friend's place I play at he's got 4 drink carts with 2 deep cup holders each. Guys drink a lot and never seen 1 spill.
Now at my place I have regular side tables with no cup holders and get the occasional spill. Easy to see his way is better.

Gonna order some carts one day. (Hard when you keep spending your savings on more chips).
Meantime might put cupholders in side tables.

In our every 2nd week game we had like 3 spilled beers over the past 4 years. All three times happened in the first weeks and the host switched to a different beer that fits the cupholder better.
