Horsehead Left for Home Games ??? (1 Viewer)

see this thread i recently posted with these links to eBay auctions for some monogrammed HHL chips.

at one time i had a stack of them with my initials that i had picked up in an antique store, but they were lost during a move in a box of stray chips that are now apparently gone forever. the ones i had handled really well. i loved shuffling them when they were around.

If I remember correctly, HHL were made a long long time ago by the company that owned some of the ASM molds before ASM did. Burt Co or something, I think.

I wish we has that mold thread over here on PCF. That was some great chip history someone pulled together over on CT.

jbutler,

That's the chips I just received.

I'm cutting down on my Sets, but have some other HHR's that I have set back for labels.

I did find out that HHL's were used a lot in California Card Rooms.

I can site no specific sources, but it was my understanding that the HHL mold is/was only used for casinos and card rooms, and not available for personal use. I'm a bit surprised at the existence of monogrammed chips on the mold.

Jim B or David S would probably be able to provide a decisive answer. Those guys are chip mold encyclopedias.

HHL chips were made by the Burt company and I believe the mold was owned by Langworthy. During that time, all the distributors would hot stamp their own chips. I have to look at my files at work but I think it mainly in the early 50s. For Nevada, the HHL chips that I can think of are from the Nevada Club and the Horseshoe Club. Not sure about California Clubs, but when I usually see old monogrammed chips, I suspect they are more likely from illegal or underground clubs, then for personal use.

Guess my memory is really bad. The attached is a HHL sample chip that I own with CW Rice as the distributor. I'll check my files at home later tonight to get it straightened out. Getting old sux!

Here's a Pic.
