Do you guys host games around the holidays? I just looked at my calendar and I've realized that for the next few weeks, my schedule is pretty booked with work and holidays coming up. I am just wondering if your group backs off the games around the holidays and resumes after the new year.

I’ll probably have a game the day before Thanksgiving or the day after if I can’t get clearance from my wife to go up to MI for @detroitdad weekend game.

In the past I would have a Thanksgiving night game when I had Thanksgiving at my house. It was great way to get rid of leftovers. But as I’ve gotten older and have 4 kids I’m too tired by 9pm to play poker.

Overall though I look at the holidays as extra time off to potentially have extra games but they most likely will need to be during the week. Lots of Christmas parties every weekend.

I host a Toys for Tots Tourney where you receive bonus chips for bringing a toy for the kiddos. I think this might be the 10th year? It now fills up immediately and is the hosting highlight of the year for me.
Links this is a fantastic idea. I hope you don't mind but I'm stealing this idea for my next tourney.

I haven’t hosted a tournament in a long time but this is a great reason to have one. My wife and I “adopt” a few underprivileged kids through the school every year to buy Christmas presents for. I enjoy buying those gifts more than I do for my own kids because mine already have so much, but thinking about how happy those kids will be getting something they probably wouldn’t have otherwise makes me happy.

I never thought about anything like this before for some reason. I've already sent the message out about it and gotten multiple responses about it. I might even get more people to come because of it. Great idea, great way to get some donations for a good cause. This is why I love this place.

We do the same :) Being dinks from small families ourselves we go absolutely HAM every year, getting everything on the lists of both families we adopt. The place we do ours through also asks the adults to provide suggestions too. It simultaneously breaks our hearts (knowing that there are families out there asking for things like bed sheets, towels, etc.) and makes our hearts full knowing (hoping) that these kids are have a nice Christmas morning.

My friend already marked dibs on hosting for December. My pre-Thanksgiving tournament in a little under two weeks is probably the last game I'm hosting in 2019. Between holiday parties, shopping, and overall hustle and bustle driving around to see family, there's going to be little time for much else.

This is the issue I run into especially with my inlaws being in a different part of the state. Fortunately for me, they live about 10 minutes from a casino. While I won't be able to host, I'll hopefully be able to still log some playing time.

Our schools do this as well, and I also enjoy it very much. This year we went straight High School, 3 kids. It's sad when a 10th grader asks for gift cards to Kroger for Christmas. We spend way more on the angel tree than we do our own kids.

My university does a giving tree and provides for local pre-k thru 3rd graders. I love going to get the ornaments off the tree and getting gifts for those children. It always makes me feel good to feel like I’m helping someone else.
Except of course when I’m giving them poker chips at the poker table.

At some point holidays > poker night. But where is that point?

My normal rotation has me hosting Tuesday night mixed games on December 24th this year. That isn't going to happen. No way I am going to stay up past my bed time and miss out on the chance Santa is coming. Though he hasn't come in many years.

On the other hand, my rotation has me hosting Dealers Choice 5th Saturday on Nov 30th, two days after Thanksgiving. This will go on as scheduled with ~7 players expected.

The annual Christmas party will run Dec 7th. The Last Game of the Year will run Dec 28th. Holiday poker is often shorter handed than other games. But we still try to play.

We also shouldn't forget that Ms. Strange will be making a vast array of Holiday deserts. This also is a fine reason to come to one of my games, cookies, cakes, spun sugar and a big pile of candy can be pretty tempting.

I'm hosting a Turkey Tournament. Small buy-in goes to the prize pool. Winner take all. I'm sure there will be a chop.

Donations made to a local food pantry get 100 chips for every dollar donated.

So far, its filling up quickly.

We raised about $300 for the food pantry. I was hoping for a little more, but it'll feed some families this thanksgiving.

This year will be our 18th annual New Year‘s day tournament. Tourney and cash game. Very popular with 30 min levels giving lots of play. Usually have around 30 to 40 players.
