Been thinking about starting a high hand "promotion" for my home game, anyone do anything like this at theirs? If so, what sort of structure does it take? We normally play a .25/.50 game and I was thinking to pull a quarter out of each pot once it hits $3, then pay the highest hand of the night either at the end if they are still around or the next time they show up to the game.

I'm also considering this for 2017 - but am going back and forth between high hand or a bad beat. Most of the players in my group would like to see a bad beat. I am watching this thread with interest!

Discussed in other threads..but I do this every week in a $1/$1 game

Mostly stolen from Courage

5+ must be dealt in the hand.
Jacks full or better pays 75% of high hand money.
Quad 2s or better pays out 100%
Must play both hole cards to be eligible.
We pay high hand at the end of the night. So If you get quad 5s at 9pm and someone gets quad 10s at 11pm, quad 10s would win the money.

Very simple and easy to track

See this thread for a discussion of a few different options as well as - as you would expect - a discussion of chips/buttons/plaques/etc. to be used in conjunction with the promotion.

Ultimate answer: yes, it's fun! If I ever run one, I will use the following rules:

- jackpot is awarded every game when the game breaks;
- jackpot is funded with one small blind pulled from each pot that reaches five big blinds;
- players must be present by a certain time to be eligible for the full jackpot (say, within half an hour of start time);
- late players will be eligible for 50% of the jackpot with the remaining 50% rolling over to the next session;
- you do not have to be present at the end of the night to take down the jackpot as long as your hand is still good;
- at least four players must be dealt into the hand.

The last rule could be modified if you want to encourage late three-handed or heads up play, but in my experience, without that rule you can tend to encourage people to play loooooooooooooong head up sessions to crack a high hand they perceive to be vulnerable.

I was just given this as a suggestion earlier today.

Why don't you have an extra say $2 as a buy-in and put that into a bad beat jackpot? every time someone buys in, add another $2 and give another bonus chip.

Wanted to add on to this thread.

I added two bomb pots in play this week, stolen idea from live at the bike.

Essentially I chose 9pm and 11pm for the bomb pot times. Once the hand hit, we all ante $10 preflop and the dealer immediately puts out the flop, no preflop action.

It went so well at 9pm, they begged for it to be added every hour, so we did it at 9, 10, 11, 12, and 1am. Huge hit among my group.

For reference we play $1/$1. We felt $10 was appropriate for our stakes

One other interesting thing I’ve seen is like an additional button ante, but they literally put it on the dealer button. Catch is that only the dealer can win that money, if any other seat wins, it remains on the button and carries over to the next hand and whoever is now in the dealer seat adds their ante. Once the dealer seat finally wins, they collect all the monies accrued on the button in addition to the regular pot. SB/BB remain unchanged.

Saw this on Neeme’s vlog once, but never tried it myself. Could be fun with an action group.

We do similar in our weekly game. we play .50/$1 before midnight and 12:01 on $1/$2. We pull $1 for every $50 that is in the pot. We pay a high hand so it does not get paid weekly, which builds the jackpot up.
No one misses $1 when they win $50, or $2 when they win $100.

we play .25/.50
I take .25 out of every hand that sees a flop
we play 5 hours and average 17 hand per hour. HH = @ $21 per night.
Fullhouse or better wins 75% of the HH pot
4 of a kind or better wins 100% of the HH pot.
if the 25% remains, it carries to the next game. We have the same players each game, so carry isn't an issue.
The hand must go to showdown
my guys enjoy it, except for the one time when a guy with aces full, after the river, checked and the only player left folded...

My Guys LOVE the High Hand Jackpot. Ours had been going for 4 months, takes quads or straight flush to win it.
This one hit on one of the last hands of the night, I was coloring guys up to make it easier to pay out and then BAM $654 winner.

Interesting. He has $12 in front of him, so I assume he bet that at showdown. Does your HH require a showdown, or had he already won the HH at that point anyway?

BTW, I respect the Majestics, as they are my work horse chip and we like em.

Yes we do require showdown. His $12 was just a call as he was last to act.
