I run a .25/.50 cash game on occasion with a couple friends/family members....ive been wanting to start a high hand for the night jackpot.... how would you handle it if someone who shows up late ends up hitting the jackpot? Was thinking of taking $.25 if 3 people see the flop then $.50 if the pots over $5 and $1 if the pots gets over $10...

It's been covered before. My feeling is that while not being raked early, the winner also didn't get cards/hands to potentially win the HHJ. In a casino, you can sit down, play one hand (pay one rake) and collect the HHJ or BBJ. Why should it be any different in a home game?

Agreed on search

I do a fixed buyin of $5 for each intersted player. High hand at the end of the night wins it. If the player isn't still there, that's okay. I'll get it to him. If he arrived late, he is paying full pop to get in. He might ask what the high hand currently is... Depending on the answer, he might not get in... That's okay too. In my mind, this is easier than raking.

Exactly how I handle it.

Hello all, in the cash game I host we do a $20 min buy in with unlimited rebuys. We rake $.25 from every single hand dealt. Last time we played it ended up at $58.00. The situation came where we had a board that was 10,10,10 on the flop, 9 turn, and 10 river. The players questioned how that would work if that stood. I established that every player that was still in the hand at showdown would split the pot.. nevertheless before we could finish the hand quad queens hit on another table.all my players enjoyed the high hand jackpot. Gives an incentive to come play even if your not very good.

If anyone has a card in their hand higher than a nine, they have a higher hand than the board. If only one person has an A in their hand, they win the hand and are the only person eligible for the high hand jackpot.

10, 10, 10, 10, A beats 10, 10, 10 , 10, 9

No one in the hand could beat the 9 kicker so the question was if the pot would be split or if the hand didn't count because of multiple winners. My final ruling was that there could be multiple winners, therefore all the players still in the hand would be eligible for the pot. Thanks for the response!

You could also make "playing the board" invalid for HH jackpot. The highest hand of the night using both hole cards, ( or 1 if you prefer), wins the HH jackpot.

Can't believe I didn't think of that! I guess I didn't think of the possibility of the high hand coming on the board. I think I'll try your idea! Thank you

I allow playing the board and the high hand is just split.

If you allow the board to play, then as a player, I'd rather the second highest hand get the HHJ over getting my money back with a split.

That's why most HHJ's require you to use both hole cards, to avoid the board playing.

I'm assuming there are more than two players in the game... and not all 8 players make it to showdown.

not all 8 players make it to showdown

I'd still rather not chop the HHJ, even if its chopped two ways. Better than chopping 8 ways, but I'd rather someone win it without having to rely on a lucky board to get there. That's just me. Your game, if that's your rules, I'll evaluate that when deciding whether or not to get in the HHJ that night.

We Usually run 2-3 tables 22+ players but I'm gonna stick with having to use at least 1 hole card.

As noted above, it’s easier to collect a set amount from each player when they first buy in for the high hand jackpot. Raking each pot for jackpot is much more difficult and unnecessary.
