Checking in from the lower left corner of Tennessee. I'm working on getting a home game started and have lurked around for about a month or so...decided to finally join and post.

Since the home game hasn't even started and I'm not sure if it'll stick, I'm not really ready to drop a significant investment in custom chips. But I've had a blast designing some on the various tools...it feels pretty hilarious to have so much fun on such an arcane activity but we like what we like, right?

To get started for the home game, I have a really cheap standard set of blanks as well as my grandfather's old bicycle plastic set. So we can definitely play. Of course, I've played a significant amount in casinos and card rooms and I love the idea of a more legitimate set. I've been looking at the various different standard sets you can get. They seem fine! But I'm definitely more interested in designing something fun that has some character.

Since I'm just dipping my toe in, I'm interested in learning what folks think might be the "least expensive acceptable" customizable chips. I totally understand the idea to get something you really like and invest the extra money in that. But I'm just getting off the ground and anything would be better than my current options. Would this be some reasonable plastics with labels? Something else? Again, I know there's no accounting for taste but at this point something a little better with customization would be a lot more fun.

I'm searching through the forums but there's soooo much here (in a great way) that it's hard to parse it all. Thanks for the help!

Hello and welcome! To steer you in the right direction, gonna need a little more info. Namely, what do you plan on playing in the home game? Cash, tourneys or both? The big one is gonna be what is your budget? You are gonna here this a million times: Get samples! Just cause something looks cool on internet once you get it in hand its a different story. The china clays from Apache might be up your alley, but some people hate the smell, internet doesnt transfer smell lol. Good luck on your hunt!

Thanks all. I really appreciate the input and am combing through the forums. There's just so much here that it's hard to make heads or tails. The intro threads are great though, really helpful information.

Since I'm not sure if my game will catch on, I want to take things pretty cautiously. At this point I want to get tournament chips and get cash chips down the road if it proves "reasonable." I think it could make sense to get blanks and labels for that. I've been having too much fun using the various designer tools to want to cave in and get a standard set (though I acknowledge that's a possibility).

I totally understand the sample-sample-sample idea. Even the "cheap" custom chips are not inexpensive. I'll be looking in-depth on the forums to see if anyone recommends blanks but also wouldn't mind someone to comes across this post with a recommendation.

Just looking around has been really fun and I can't wait to share some designs.

Many thanks all.

Hello and welcome! You can get semi-custom chips for a reasonable price from @BR Pro Poker to meet your needs. They are wonderful to work with. Make sure to use the poker chip calculator too. You don't need as many chips as you might think. I used the Blinds Up app to run my tournaments when I started. There are lots of great resources for blind structures on this forum. Check out @Chris Manzoni YouTube page too for coloring up and starting stacks.
