I have dove into the deep deep rabbit hole of poker chips! Milanos, Valentinos, clay or ceramics. I don't want to waste my money on mediocre, but I don't have the bankroll to buy Paulsons. What's a boy to do? I'm starting with a set for 10 people low stakes cash game -- 0.25/0.25. I have learned so much from this site already! Thanks to everyone for the insight I have already learned.

Welcome to the fun boat! I second the vote for CPCs, but you are already on a great start!

With good chips, you are not spending money. You're just "renting" them!

I'm a significant chunk of $$ into my new Cali/WA micro set, but I can get over 90% of it back any time I want, all 100% on a good day.

Welcome! The idea is either to convert your wife or find interesting ways to import the chips into your home without her knowing. I've smuggled them in using Home Depot orange gallon buckets.
LOL, they didn't make noise?

Multiple trips under the guise of sump pump maintenance... Also, they were layered between bubble wrap.

Yes yes I know... If she looked in it, I would have been busted. But I took that risk. Also, filling up the bucket with actual water and placing the chips in water tight bags was a level of crazy I wasn't prepared for (notice the past tense in that statement)

Nice that's some real sh*t right there lol.
I prefer to just grab the packages from the mailbox and fight over whose opening what lol

Same spot, minus the wife leaving!

Have just missed out on a few solid sets myself between $400 -700. Think its worth it to wait if one can.

Starting to kick around the idea of grabbing the Prestige, and then collecting by the Rack afterwards ...

Prestige is an awesome way to dive in without breaking the bank and getting some semi custom chips.

Welcome to the forum. I won’t attempt marriage counseling but I know for sure that building a casino used Paulson set including 25 cent chips for $1/chip is possible. Not easy, but possible and worth it.

See how the Mock-ups come back, if I could get Old Schools it'd be done already.

Or if I could just find the right partner to chop one of these 800-1000 piece sets ...

I was thinking to go with a set of Majestics for low level cash game (.25/.25), and Valentinos for tourneys. Let me know your thoughts.

My thoughts: not enough info

Cash game: How many players? What stake ranges do you need to cover for? How much money on the table at the end of the night? Will the game expand?
Tournament game: How many players/tables? Starting structure? How many rebuys allowed?

Once you've defined your games, you can then estimate how many chips you will need, and of what denominations.
Then comes budget: how much can you spend, per chip, to satisfy your cash set needs and your tournament needs? How fast do you need to build them.

The absolutely wrong question to start with is: are these good chips/should I buy them? because at the end of the day, it is about how YOU like them in play, not OUR opinions; but the bare minimum criteria they need to satisfy is that it works for the games that you are going to play.

Get as many samples to evaluate as reasonably possible.

First, I appreciate the request for more info!

Cash game: How many players? No more than 10 on any given night.
What stake ranges do you need to cover for? $25 min and $60 Max Buy-in.
How much money on the table at the end of the night?
Should be $500 on average, but I feel like closer to $300-$400.
Will the game expand? Not anytime soon!
Tournament game: How many players/tables? 20 people max
Starting structure? Was thinking 5K starting stack with 25/50 starting blinds
How many rebuys allowed? 10 re-buys or so. We can use higher denom chips to cover rebuys.

Okay, cash game first. 0.25/0.25 blinds, max $500 on the table, but need some wiggle room just in case. With $25-60 buy in x10 players, you will need mostly quarters and ones as your workhorse chips.
200x $0.25, 200x $1, 100x $5 gives you 500 chips for $750 bank total. Barrel each of quarters and $1s for the first $25 of buy-in, $5 chips to make up all the rest (and reloads).
Is it possible to get away with fewer chips? Yes, but I wouldn't comfortably go below 120x $0.25, 180x $1, 100x $5 (400 chips for $710 bank). 12x $0.25 and 17x $1 for the first $20 of buy-in, $5 to make up the difference.

Tournament game. Starting blinds 25/50, T5000 starting stacks, 20 people (2 tables), 20 rebuys (1 per person)
Popular breakdown: 12/12/3/2 (29 chips) x20 players = 580 chips for starting stacks. Add 120 chips (mostly T1000 but some T500) for colour-up/rebuy. 700 chips
Can try to bring down the number of chips at the expense of greater change-making in the earlier part of the tournament.
Skinny breakdown: 8/8/4/2 (22 chips) x20 players = 440 chips for starting stacks. Add 60-100 chips of T1000 for colour-up/rebuy. min 500 chips*.

So between the 2 sets, you've probably got a bare minimum of 900 chips and a slightly looser total of 1200 chips. Now set your budget for the total, and you have an idea of what types of chips you can reasonably afford to get.

The above numbers are merely my opinions based on what I perceive are your game requirements. You will ultimately have other ideas. Also bear in mind that sets are rarely available in *exactly* the breakdowns that you need, and you may have to round up each denomination to the nearest 25 chips to meet block quantities.
