Hello,
I've just started thinking on the design of my first custom set and at the moment I'ts just lots and lots of confused Ideas.

One of the question I have though is which would be the best color choice to get a custom chip from CPC which would look like the $25 Pioneer Reno I really love:

Using the online tool it looks like the best matching choice would be Green+Canary but I'm not sure that would really work or would look similar to the Pioneer in any way.

I don't have a CPC colors sample set, I'll probably buy one sooner or later but was wondering if anyone could help in the meantime with their experience on the field :).

Thank you

You can also make a case for Retro Green:

As everyone said though, get samples. Pictures vary to you actually holding them in your hands.

I agree with samples but I'll caution that even that can be deceiving. IMO canary sucks. For my tournament set I ordered canary chips for my 1000 with a 3D14 spot using purple and DG Green. Unfortunately it looks a lot muddier than I expected. It's my least favorite of all. My first thought was maybe the colors varied between runs. I held samples of my spot colors over them and started to see the problem. I covered one set of spots with my canary sample chip and the others with my thumb. Taking the spots off the table showed that the canary was identical between the chips.

I came to realize that the spots trick the eye into seeing a slightly different shade, and in this case it makes the already somewhat dull color even duller. I can't tell if it's the purple, the DG Green or both being side by side. Unfortunately your desire to get that particular yellow is not going to work; it just doesn't exist in the CPC palette. The DG Yellow might be the closest.

I solved my particular problem in typical PCF fashion though. The T1000s and grey T5000s will be packed away. They will be replaced by 44mm T2000s and T10ks. This takes care of my color problem, gave me an excuse to buy 44mms, gets me a legitimate T2000 and increases the top denom of my set. Can't wait til they arrive.

Sorry for the threadjack, but what's up with CPC colors? I had an idea for a custom set that would require BRIGHT colors. I took one look at their color selection and just said, I guess not. They all seem so dull. Are they better in person? I've played with a couple of CPC sets and never sat there thinking that the colors were dull, but then again, I wasn't studying the colors either; I was playing cards.

Waaaaaaaay brighter in person. DG Tiger burns my retinas (in a good way.) I was surprised when I got my sample how bright they were compared to the design tool. That being said there are also a lot of dull colors as well.

I have a sample set I'm not currently using. If you want to borrow them just pay shipping and I can send them your way, and you can just send them back whenever.

And just to get back on topic, another photo in different (dimmer) lighting of a sample set.

1 - Retro Green surrounded by DG Yellow (upper left), DG Arc Yellow (upper right) and Canary (bottom)

2 - Green surrounded by the same as above

Thanks, but I'm nowhere near close, financially, to ordering the kind of set I'd want.

Ha I thought this way too but if you're playing with the chip design tool, you'll find a way to get the money to order a set.

And I agree with a couple others that it looks like retro green for the base and dg yellow would be closest. Even though I think dg arc yellow would look best.

As its been said already, SAMPLES, SAMPLES, SAMPLES, you will need them in front of you to make the right call... Colors are different in the tool then in real life.

Good luck with your journey, and have fun...

I'm almost completely sold on the Retro Green but I can't see how DG Saturn, DG Yellow and DG Arc Yellow can be closer to the Paulson than Canary.
I would agree that DG Arc Yellow looks better though.

@btbmason thanks for your offer but Im gonna buy samples as soon as possible.
In your post I can spot a color I think would fit well on the spots of the chip and that's the ninth chip on the left stack starting from the top. Is it plain Yellow?

Yes that's Yellow. The chips should be in the same order they are in the design tool, from the bottom (front) up.

Here is Retro Green between Canary (left) and Yellow (right) - pardon the weird lighting, the light is near my desk right now.

Edit - Here is a bit darker photo

Thank you, very useful photos.
I really like plain Yellow in your photos, just realised it since I don't like it on the tool.
Maybe I still prefer DG Arc Yellow but that's the proof I need to buy samples soon.

Edit:
I love the A-mold too!!!
