Okay not necessarily Ghetto, but my wife and I are traveling to Vegas with another couple who are on a shoestring budget. Instead of going separate ways for hotels & poker then meet up for the occasional drink/food, the wives are electing all of us to stay together. I'm fine with this, even though the other husband doesn't gamble and I'm known to be a disaster for days straight and prefer my poker rooms to be where my hotel room is located.

My background is staying on the strip where poker is close and the rooms are decent. Bellagio, Venetian, Mirage, etc. This is out of their budget and yes every dollar counts. The friend is looking at Hard Rock for about $1K (w/flight incl) for two people for 3 nights. I would prefer we do Venetian for $1350, but the extra $350 is a deal breaker for them which means more money in my pocket for degen'ing.

Here is what the wives are looking for:
- Pool
- Pretty drinks

They don't shop, they don't gamble. They LOVE to party.

I will be taking a cab to Bellagio/Wynn when they are sleeping to play poker, so poker isn't necessarily important for the hotel casino we stay in, although drunken 1/2 convenience might come into play. Wives have a wild side, so anything can work in that area. Given this, do you think Hard Rock is a good choice? Other choices?

Hard Rock will be a good option for pool and parties. You might also consider the Luxor - they have a pretty large pool area w/DJ's frequently out there.

bunny ranch obv. longer cab ride for poker, but still.

I stayed at NYNY last time I was in Vegas and thought it was a great experience. Cheapest big resort we could get into without going all the way down to SLS. Easy access to Monte Carlo, Aria, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay. The other casinos are a bit of a walk or a cab ride. Some good party bars inside NYNY, too, if that's what your group is looking for. Rooms were pretty nice for the price, I thought. Also has a pool. No poker room, obviously, but it sounds like you have your preferred rooms and won't be staying at those hotels regardless.

Tram that goes from the across the street to Mandalay Bay doesn't run past midnight or 2 AM or something on weekends, but Monte Carlo or (shudder) Excalibur would be available for convenient next door poker.

EDIT: actually it wasn't the cheapest we could get into, but the cheapest none of the guys wanted to veto. We weren't gonna stay at Excalibur or Trop.

Hard Rock has a big pool party scene esp on the weekend. Poker room is $1/3 either uncapped or $1000 Max I forget. It may fit your bill.

Flamingo, room rates are SUPER reasonable. Great location, has free pool party with your stay, Others staying at different hotels often join the Flamingo pool because of how large it is.

Plus you can walk to Bellagio and Caesars in about 2 mins

I've stayed at TI several times. Rooms are pretty reasonable for the strip, & they just remodeled them 4-5 years ago. Pool area is small, but nice. (They have several cabanas)
They get some decent 1/2 games going in their poker room on the weekends, but TI would also put you very close to the Mirage & Venetian.

Can't speak to the pool/party atmosphere as that's not really my scene.

And while I wouldn't necessarily call Flamingo "ghetto" it's definitely not flashy or over-the-top lavish but it is reasonably priced with a fantastic location.

Now if you really want ghetto on the strip, get in a time machine and stay at the IP. I'm not sure if they've re-done the rooms at the Linq - gosh I hope they have.
