Game: Hosting a $30+10 bounty rebuy tournament in a few weeks and I am hoping to get some feedback to see if this all makes sense and if it will work logistically speaking.

I am expecting between 25-30 people.
Every rebuy will be the full $30+10 and you will receive a new bounty chip if you bust.
Rebuys will be available for the first 2 hours or 8 blind levels

Starting Stack 10k. Break down: 1 x $5,000. 2 x $1,000. 4 x $500. 8 x $100. 8 x $25

Here is the structure

Here is the breakdown of the tournament set I have
300 x $25
300 x $100
160 x $500
160 x $1000
80 x $5000
Total bank: 677,500, enough for 67 total buyins/rebuys

First question, has anyone else done a tournament like this? I feel short on the bank, the last thing I would ever want to happen is to be short and not have enough chips. Do you feel like with this structure and a 2 hour rebuy window I will even come close to getting to 67 total buyins?

Second question, do you have suggestions on places I can change something? Time is NOT a concern for the length of the tournament

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

No way you'll get to 67 buy ins at that structure. I would guess that 12 rebuys is your number. I think you're fine with the chips. If you want to guarantee it, make the earlier levels 20m as well.

With 30 players and your blind structure, the typical re-buy rate is about 25% or 7-8 total re-buys. Planning for 10 (33%) should be more than sufficient, and your chip set is capable of handling this. Use 5xT1000 plus 1xT5000 for the ten re-buys (you are going to need the extra T1000 chips in play later). Below is what you need (your set quantities in parenthesis):

240 x T25 (300)
240 x T100 (300)
120 x T500 (160)
140 x T1000 (160) - includes 30x for color-ups of T25/T100 chips, plus 50x for 10 re-buys
40 x T5000 (80) - includes 10x for 10 re-buys
-----------
780 chips (1000)
You will have 40x extra T5000 chips, enough for an additional 20 re-buys if needed.

Part of the reason your re-buy numbers will be smaller than you think is due to the blind structure. By the time your re-buy period ends, a T10K re-buy only contains 17BB (a -EV investment), and only foolhardy die-hards will be re-buying if busting out after L5. This is mostly due to the early levels drastically slashing the starting stack size from 200BB to only 67BB with the first two blind increases (100% and 50%). Making the early increases more aligned with your later gentler progression (20%-33%) allows the re-buy stack to remain a reasonable purchase well into the re-buy period.

With your blind structure, the tournament will last around 7 hours, finishing around L23 (10000/20000 blinds). With no re-buys allowed, it will finish in about 6 hours (L20, 5000/10000 blinds).

Any suggestions on how you might improve it? Or keep the BB higher for the first few levels? add a 25/25 level in at the beginning?

Time is not a concern, I would not mind it lasting 8-9 hours conceivably.

@BGinGA

Start at 25/25 and squeeze in a 25/75 patent-pending BGinGA supa-level™. That will help with people being short stacked too quickly.

I recommend you add three new levels:
L1 - 25 / 25
L3 - 25 / 75
L7 - 125 / 250
and retain the 2-hour re-buy period (8 levels).

This accomplishes the following:
- it bumps the starting stack from 200BB to 400BB
- the 10K re-buy stack is now 33BB during L8 (vs 17BB), and more importantly, 100BB during L4 (vs 50BB), and still 50BB during L6 (vs 25BB).
- it drops the average blind increase down to 29% (vs 32%)
- it bumps the total tournament play-time to L26 or around 8 hours plus breaks (vs 7 hours plus breaks)

If you can live with the extra hour, this is definitely the way I'd go. Make sure you reset the color-up/break points to fit the modified schedule.

Here are the first eight levels in the modified blind structure:

rd sb bb
L1 25 25
L2 25 50
L3 25 75
L4 50 100
L5 75 150
L6 100 200
L7 125 250
L8 150 300

Everything after 150/300 follows the original structure.

It probably won't significantly increase the total number of re-buys, but it certainly increases the value of those that are purchased (extending the effective re-buy period to the full two hours).

I run a similar rebuy structure, but have 20 min levels from the start with rebuys up to the first break at the end of level 5
I don't get 25+ players and only allow 1 rebuy per person to keep the game civil and still finish in a timely fashon

The Iron Donkey Poker League is very similar to this. 10K start stacks. 30 total members and so far this season we have had 28 show up both times. One rebuy allowed per player for the first four rounds. 25 minute rounds

Tier Small Blind Big Blind
1 25 50
2 25 75
3 50 100
4 75 150
5 125 250 - Break – replace T25
6 200 400
7 300 600
8 500 1000 - Break
9 800 1600
10 1200 2400
11 1600 3200 – Break – Replace T100 and T500
12 2000 4000
13 3000 6000
14 5000 10,000
15 8,000 16,000
16 12,000 24,000
17 18,000 36,000

We start at 7 (ish). So far we have ended both times just a bit before 2:00 A.M.
