Hi All!

I was an active member back in the day on chiptalk.net, but I see that it sadly has gone the way of the dodo. :(

I used to have a weekly, 2 table tournament game at my house back during the Hold 'Em golden years (early-mid '00s). After playing in a few cash games (at home and casinos), I found I much prefer it, abandoned the tourney play and have been sporadicaly having smaller (6-8 player) cash games at my house ever since.

Before Covid, I finally had a good group of regulars and we were almost playing weekly. Then Covid hit and put the brakes on. With the end (sort of) in sight, I've been really jonesing to get the game back up and running and have been thinking about upgrading my lowly set of plastic chips. Went to hop on Chiptalk to see what is out there these days, and ended up here. :)

Looking at getting some china clays and just ordered some samples from Apache (glad to see they are still around!); Milano, Pharaohs, Majestic, Dunes. Looking to get about a 700 piece set.

Welcome to the zoo! Don't see many folks from SD around here. My mother is from Lane, SD and I was born in Sioux Falls, grew up in Iowa, and moved to Texas after college.

China clays don't get a lot of love around here, but I like them a lot. Another chip in that price range that you might consider if you're not in a hurry is the CUSTOM Cards mold polyclay ceramic. Yup, custom chips at China clay prices. There's talk of a new group buy forming soon. Check out the first page of this thread, then skip to the last page.

Hello and welcome. My mom grew up in Timber Lake, SD, so I spent plenty of time there back in the day. Welcome!

I must admit, I had never heard of Lane, SD....had to Google it to even know where it was. :) I'm a life-long Rapid City resident myself.

Thank you for the heads-up on those customs! Looks very interesting and I am not really in a hurry. I'll definitely be checking out the possibility of getting in on the group buy!

Hello and welcome! Fellow South Dakotan here.

Surprised to see so many folks with a link to SD here! Thank you all for the welcome!!

Dang, after closer inspection, it seems those are ceramics. I much prefer the feel and sound of clay (or faux "clay") chips. Had a set of Nevada Jack's Mardi Gras ceramics for my tourneys years ago, and while they were great chips, I really prefer the -thunk- of clay over the -clink- of ceramics. :)

Maybe you can change my mind...? ;)

If you want real clay chips like Paulsons, TRKs or CPCs, then nothing else is going to look, feel and sound like those. China clays are no more like real clay than ceramics. I have samples of just about every China clay that's available, plus a few real clay chips and several different ceramics. They are all noticeably inferior imitations of real compressed clay casino chips. The only way you're going to know if you like a particular chip or not, is to get samples, because to me, every one of them is a little different. Just because you like Dunes doesn't mean you're going to like Pharaohs. Just because you like Majestics, doesn't mean you're going to like Milanos. They are all different. And just because you don't like Nevada Jacks, that doesn't mean you're not going to like Cards mold ceramics.

The Cards mold ceramic blank is also sometimes called Polyclay. It was definitely designed to look and feel more like a clay chip than your typical ceramic that you may be used to. How well they accomplished that is a matter of personal opinion. Some people hate them, while a whole lot of us here love them. Evidenced by the fact that our first group buy - targeted by the organizer to be a 10-20K order, ballooned to over 70K chips being ordered. Since that first buy, at least another 50-60K chips have been ordered. A lot of guys here who thought they would hate them are ordering sets themselves, including a lot of guys who have large collections of real clay chips. The fact is, there is a lot to love. They're cool, they're custom, and they're cheap.

That's my best sales pitch! :D PM me if you would like to borrow a stack to play around with.

Welcome to PCF!

What part of SoDak are you in? We're moving to Rapid City on May 1. And I'm bringing some tables and a bunch of chips with me.

EDIT:

RAPID CITY???

Damn, son! We'll definitely have to meet once we get up there!!

After reading up a bit more on the "card mould" ceramics, color me intrigued! PM incoming! :)
